Re: Torque Converter
Is that a huge pipe (Swiss Horn style) or are they tiny conjoined slippers? The slippers look like holders for some Werthers...

Argh, you said Werthers. Now chunk will be writhing around in rapture, losing his slippers and crushing his pipe.

Re: Torque Converter
Same fault I had with my gearbox - it is something to do with the failure of the first/second gear hub. I had to take my car to Grizz - he removed box and sent it to Chester Automatics (?) who confirmed failure of component. Warranty company sent in their engineer to view the broken item and agreed to pay for replacement of the offending item and labour. Didn't get as much out of them as Bam but us Welsh aren't as well known as those from down under for sheer bloody perseverance - so well done Bam for all the effort it took to wring the money out of them!!

This sounds like the forward clutch drum , All our boxes are rebuild with a modified heavy duty unit to prevent it from happening again .

So does the basket/drum split then Grizz? Or does the 'o'ring fail?grizz wrote:This sounds like the forward clutch drum , All our boxes are rebuild with a modified heavy duty unit to prevent it from happening again .

Re: Torque Converter
I find this strange i spoke to a couple of people on here and most were saying that my symptoms pointed to a failing or failed torque converter. However some are now saying that it could be the Fwd gear and possibly O rings etc.
Has anyone else had the problem where the revs would go high and the next gear wouldn't always engage straight away, however as the revs came down the gear would engage sometimes harshly with bang..
Can anybody define how to know or to check the symptoms of a failed box in terms of a TC?
Thanks

Re: Torque Converter
Nothing you say or find yourself will convince the warranty company. You will need to get an expert to say that the box is broken.
The TC handles the transmission of torque from the engine to the gearbox. There are 2 major bits to it - one is the TC itself which uses principles of fluid dynamics to transmit the torque from engine to box via some cleverly shaped bits. The other bit is the lock-up clutch. When the TC has spun up the gearbox to as close as it's going to get to the engine speed (can never be 100% because of the principles of the fluid dynamics) then the clutch closes and mechanically links the 2 together. There is a period of slip (or regulation) while the clutch locks up.
Frequently on the RS6 the lock-up clutch fails. Due to worn friction material or lack of pressure from a seal. This will generate a code, but won't stop you driving the car. You just won't get that mechanical lock up that helps with fuel economy.
If the TC itself fails (much rarer) then none, or not all, of the drive will be transferred to the gearbox. This will generally result in either you going nowhere, or the revs going up without much forward movement.
Assume the TC is working fine: Torque is being transmitted to the box. When the box changes gear, it uses a series of clutches to release the drive from one spline while the gear is being changed, then re-engage the drive smoothly in the new gear ratio. When these clutches wear (or there is not enough force on them from a pressure problem, or both, the former often being caused by the latter) then when the clutch is engaged, it is not able to effectively synchronise the speed of the driving gearset with the driven one. As more force is applied to the clutch, it suddenly snatches because of metal to metal friction and this is what causes your harsh kick in the back.
That's as simple as I can explain it. Your problem is probably not caused by the TC, but the TC is probably borked also. These things tend to take each other out.

Re: Torque Converter
As said above plus if you ever have a new gearbox then a new torque converter should be fitted anyway.
Also, it is very hard to diagnose a fault without witnessing it!!
OP, where are you located?

Re: Torque Converter
Forgot to say, if your verter is shafted then box has to come out anyway. Me personally, i would get it sent away and regurbed while it is out.
