I have had my S4 Avant Tiptronic since March this year covering 9k. MPG is def worse than I expected but has really improved over last couple of months- on motorway circa 80mph now up around 26. Average since purchase nearly 22. I tend not to use it if driving around town too much if I can help it
Gearbox is well suited to the car - easy going and if want to have a little fun then the manual control is Ok but no manual gearbox and popping it into sport mode and then using manual works pretty well.
Engine is really effortless in power delivery. As have been mentioned it does not attract attention which I why I bought it and an M3 whilst probably more involving etc really does stand out too much for day to day use.
Extras worth having- BOSE, I have the std Sat Nav and it is good but you do lose the sense of perspective without a map to look at but I didn't want a screen in the middleof my dash. PDC for those ( like me) who find parking a time consuming bind and cruise control - helps the MPG!

Overall I really like the car and it will stay the distance with me( 2 yrs). So much so that I have sold my Griff as not using it enough- testmony indeed!
Regards

I have to say the MPG of the S4 does surprise me (as with everyone else I see!). With my RS4, It always seems to average around 23mpg. I'd say I do about 50:50 motorway and country roads, and I always end up flooring it wherever possible (even though I sometimes think I should try and be more economical :drink: ) because that's why I bought it, and it's far too addictive not to! Damn, it is too easy to hit the red line every time!

Drove the S4 V8 recently - what a fabulous engine! Was expecting a lazy V8 like my TVR had, but no! Very responsive and free revving. Sport mode on the autobox worked very well too, again very responsive and urgent (thought Tiptronic ineffective). MPG on test was 18. The engine should do much better than that; this is SUV territory, and as someone says an M3 will easily do 29.

Suspension's a little too comfy, over servoed brakes and the steering feel was a bit low for the boy racer in me/us:lol:

Overall a lovely car.

My car's stage 3 so not sure if that helps or hinders (helps as it's more efficient, hinders as I keep using the extra "efficiency". Since Easter I have averaged 18mpg. This is exactly the same as all the others owners have posted and what I expected before buying. On a cruise to Luxembourg (cruise control on at 85mph) it managed 26.5mpg. Around the 'ring is was sub 10. Overall for the 3000mile trip it was 19.8mpg.

Done circa 7k miles now, average 20.5, with a large proportion of those miles being motorway crusing at 75-ish (cruise control too). Not brilliant: you would have thought Audi might have addressed this issue with the forthcoming B7, but no. :?

just done a long run through Holland + Germany in my S4; an unmodified B6 about 18 months old. Just using the computer at constant speed, fuel usage worked out at:

town use == 16 mpg :cry:
62 mph == 27 mpg (NL)
75 mph == 24 mpg (NL)
125 mph == 19 mpg (D)

NL, Holland was on *flat* motorway, no throttle usage
D, Germany was on quite hilly motorway, a lot of throttle usage, also trying to maintain 200 km/h in traffic

Your figures are mirroring pretty much exactly what mine's returning, but see other post....
