Full enough that you won't get any surge but not over filled so that you start burning it.
Going from full to 1/4 in 300 miles on fresh oil is massive.
That's either a leak or some other failure.
Firstly you need to conclusively establish where it's being burnt.
Get the car up to temperature and let idle for a but. Then ask a mate/partner to blip the throttle and see if the oil is actually coming out of the exhaust. Sometimes a leak in the engine bay can hit warm components and burn off but from the drivers seat it looks like its coming out the back when you pull away.
If its not out the exhaust then get it on a ramp and checked ASAP.
Oil fires can be very nasty and very quick. Not worth taking the chance.
If its te exhaust then the first thing to check would be the above - th pcv valve.
Iirc it's by the oil filter under the carbon cover near the back of the engine.
You'll need to remove and inspect for any damage or cracks.
This is by far the cheapest thing to replace.
If not this then look for vacuum issues. The pcv has a vacuum valve that opens to release the caught oil to the sump. If this never opens then it'll back up and send oil into the intake.
Lots in the archives.
After this its looking more like internal engine component but let's cross that bridge when we get to it.
It's not leacking and defo coming out the exhaust I read somewhere 1000 miles rs4 uses 1 litre of oil so 1/4 is ok no 300 mile x4 is 1200 to 1 litre I have defo been over filling if you not ment to fill to max .. Also when I done the oil change it took about 10 litres mad may be more

There's your problem! You should read the manual, that is not good for the engine.Jamiestanton wrote:Thanks I will try this yes I have filled up to max when cold I will change the pcv also any one know the price on these

!!!!
You can't fill up when cold to the max.
The excess oil is being drawn up into the heads and combusted hence the blue smoke.
If you are doing an oil change its unlikely to need much over 9litres. The official spec is 9.6 iirc but you never get all the oil out of the coolers and pipes. This is why many dealers end up overfilling as they just set their machine to dump in what's in the book.
As for your decoked intake... Chances are its worse than ever now
I think Arthur pointed out that under expansion the oil will effectively displace an extra half litre or so when up to temperature. That's a huge difference.

It'll take some time to get the residue out.
Go for a long drive snd get oil temp up over 100c.

And as ads notes, run it hard for a bit. Get the oil hot and working. Keep checking the oil levels and work out how much yours uses. They're all different (mine used barely half a litre in 1500 miles when checking recently).
If it's still doing this you would, I would think, see higher consumption and it'll either show itself quickly (1k miles) or you'll burn any excess off and eventually it'll stop doing it and you'll know how much you're using.
I wouldn't change any other parts until you've done the basics.
