CHARGE TEMP ON S4

Post by BRETTCOLLINS » Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:25 am

Does anyone know what the running inlet charge temp should be at on S4.

Even with RS4 intercoolers on the car, Think that the car is still getting to hot.

Was going to go that way with front mounted cooler, But was told that the RS4 intercoolers would be upto the job. What the best way of finding out the charge temp of this car.

You can log it on VagCom if you have it.
As for what it should be, no idea except the lower the better.
What sort of boost are you running ?
I origionally ordered the FMIC to go on my S4 which was the same spec as yours.

Going to look into running water injection, Had it on other turbo cars before, found it to work well.

I tested a RS4 and a S4 on a hot day this year............
The RS4 was about 15/20 deg colder at the same point in the drive after the same speed run up. It was interesting how hot the S4`s intake was 50+ deg

For maximum performance inlet temps on any turbo car should be between 15 (ideal) and 35 degrees C

How is the FMIC plumbed with the twin turbos (presumably you are removing the SMICs and taking the combined charge from both turbos before intercooling it or is the FMIC dual entry? What happens to pipe lengths and coolant temperatures?

Hi John,
Yes you remove the SMICs, FMIC is dual entry pipe lengths are longer but no discernable pressure drop that I have noticed.
Inlet temps on mine dropped by around 15 to 20 degrees.

I would say this is your best bet. Keep the SMIC's.

Cars that are run hard in the US with FMIC's have overheating problems...especially on the race track. Not good.

Read the following two links. WI provides better results (for a lot less money) than an FMIC would.

Overheating because the coolant rad gets prewarmed air that has gone through the FMIC?

Yep. The radiator gets significantly less air...and the air it does get is warmer.

Not true Verruckt, there have been some reports of overheating but the majority do not see this problem.
It is certainly not a given which is the way you imply it in your post.
The FMIC has also had a redesign since that time.
I have never seen the coolant temp on my car go up by even 1 deg during the summer and this is running with the fans all switched off, and yes the car does get driven hard !
There has been 1 issue with a car running oil temp too LOW, this is probably down to a faulty thermostat, again on mine no issues oil temp is spot on, running the std Audi stat.
