sounds like either a fluid leak or master/slave cylinder failure.
What's the clutch pedal feel like?

Don't know how true this is but I was told after blowing the gearbox in my AC Cobra replica that if it will go into gear when the engine is off then it is the clutch but if it still won't go into gear even with the engine off then it is the gearbox. Or was it the other way round. Hopefully someone can confirm or deny this!

Could have been:
  • Snowflake symbol indicating low temperature.
Tyre pressure warning symbol - Amber = low pressure loss and Red = high pressure loss.
TPMS malfunction (as above but amber and with line through the middle).

it will go into gear when the engine is off. I don't understand it though it worked perfectly on the way there and since ive had the car. whe n it had the new engine fitted they also said that the clutch was fine, and obviously test drove it after it had been fitted and didn't pick up on anything. can something like a flywheel/ clutch just fail/ break? and the light is the tyre pressure thing I checked it :)

I seem to be having this same problem. On cold start, car goes in to 1st easily when engine is off. However when engine is on, it takes a bit of force and a few tries to get it in first. Once rolling, gear changes are smooth. Also clutch feels fine.

Any thoughts?

Worth an attempt to change the transmission fluid. It's probably the cheapest and quickest thing to try first.

I had something similar recently, I thought it might be clutch cylinder but it needed a clutch replacement. it changes like a dream again now

Not sure a transmission fluid will help that much. I have noticed a slight difficultly engaging first and second gearshift that has coincided with the dreaded sticky clutch pedal so I'm assuming its an issue with the clutch that is causing the difficulty getting into gear.

I had changed the tranny fluid a month beforehand and although it improved the gear change it does still have difficulty engaging first and second.
