Yeah fine on the wee Peugeot but probably unwise on a 4.2!

bad news all round on this, so appreciate any additional help.

Battery fully charged and back in, nothing same problem. Un hooked the under dash trim found the clutch switch, unplugged it and jumped the 2 terminals, nothing.

Went to a battery specialist , he said by battery was ok, not like a new one but ok. He's put it on a slow charge for me. Being impatient I bought a brand new one that I could get a refund on and came back and fitted that. Nothing.............

So it's not the battery, I don't think it's the clutch switch if my jumper was the right way to do things, and the starter button has power because the red ring lights up when the lights switch on.

Any more ideas or am I at the mercy of the yellow pages............

Starter motor or starter relay....... or the starter button switch by the gearstick.

A customer about year ago said his was stranded outside his house with a dead starter button, was under warranty back then and Audi assist sorted it out.

However I'd suggest starter or starter relay are more likely.

Slow you said at the outset you have messed with some of the ignition wiring and the ignition and starter button are obviously linked, i.e. you need to turn the ignition on then push the start button. Have you checked what you did is / was ok? Sounds to coincidental to me that you were working on the electrics and then it would not start. Not saying you didn't know what you were doing but perhaps you have inadvertantly left a wire disconnected or loose. I'd retrace the work you did and check all connections, etc.
Hope you get it sorted, hell starting the car is what we all look forward to :biggrin3:
It's an Audi RS4 V8............. what else do you need to know!

Ok thanks guys, I'll check the starter button wiring and what I did last weekend.

Any ideas on how to check the starter motor and which relay the starter relay is ?

Starter relay is definitely down on the starter motor itself

Ultimately, when you press the start button (with clutch depressed) there should be a 12v supply hitting the starter relay / solenoid. You also need the big +12v wire, normally straight from the battery, and a good earth. If you have all 3 then you should be able to hear the motor turning. If you can't then the fault must be relay / solenoid / motor. The only problem is, I don't know how accessible the starter / solenoid is to test on in situ on the RS4, I don't imagine there is any room to get to it.

All sorted, nothing more than a case of flat battery and a blown fuse, number 42 ECU. This is where the cowboy parrot install had been wired into for the switched ignition so one new 15amp fuse and a recharged battery and all fine.

Thanks for all the help from everyone, I've learnt loads about the car and any other potential probs so let's hope this thread is a good helper for anyone that has any starting problems.

Phew, stress over! Glad its sorted. Nothing worse than chasing a fault, can get scary expensive before long!

One to keep in mind if anything happens in the future as I've got a Parrot kit too.

Hi ! Did you mean the fuse 43 with 15amp ? Fuse 42 (25A) seems to be for the ABS ECU.. ?
Having the same issue btw. I trying to find the root cause .
