Windscreen wiper problem

i've got a bloody annoying windscreen wiper problem.

When I select downwards on the single wipe option it wipes once, sort of parks and then wipes again, like it thinks it been selected again. Doesn't always do it, plus i've noticed it sometimes does the same when I've got it set on the variable wipe "up 1 click" on the stalk.

Any ideas? or is it only fixable by getting a new stalk fitted?

Not sure, but I doubt it's the stalk. The wiper motor assembly itself will contain a switch which will maintain power once the wiper starts moving. That's how you can 'blip' the control and it will still do a full sweep. If this switch is somehow faulty, it will still power the motor after it has parked, causing it to go again. A 'sticky' switch is a likely possibility, so a good clear might fix it.
