Top Gear Roll ons

Post by toasty » Tue Mar 04, 2003 2:48 pm

Hi,

I remember doing this a while back on Audi-Sport.net I think (before the rebuild)

Thought that it might be an idea to do it again, perhaps for other models other than the S4.

The idea behind it last time was that it gave a good indication if your car was running as expected, but is far easier to time and less open to driver skill than 0-60 and the like (and friendlier on the old clutch!)

Anyway, here are my results.

Ok,

Did some tests.
These results are for a standard 1998 S reg Audi S4 saloon with 50k miles.
All tests were perfomed on the flat, using Optimax (half tank) air-con on, engine warm,
no passengers and a 100kg driver (not sure if that makes a difference or not)

I did three speed ranges in 4th, 5th and 6th.
The tests were performed by staying at the lower speed for a few seconds on a trailing throttle, then hitting
the accelerator and the start button of the stop watch at the same time.
(again not sure if this makes any difference, but thought it was 'fairer' than accelerating
from a lower speed and hitting the start button when the speedo indicated the bottom end
of the speed range)

Anyway, here are the results:

Gear 4th Range 50-70 Time 4 seconds
Gear 5th Range 50-70 Time 5 seconds
Gear 6th Range 50-70 Time 6 seconds

Gear 4th Range 60-90 Time 6 seconds
Gear 5th Range 60-90 Time 7 seconds
Gear 6th Range 60-90 Time 9 seconds

Gear 4th Range 70-90 Time 4 seconds
Gear 5th Range 70-90 Time 5 seconds
Gear 6th Range 70-90 Time 6 seconds

All speeds in MPH (obviously not done on British roads)

Hi Dan,

Your post has dragged me out of the woodwork!

I regularly carry out a few of these when bored on my way to work to make sure all is well with my car.

Figures for my 99 S4 are within .1 or .2s of yours over multiple attempts.

More power like the RS4 and modded S4 guys (such as Dippy) have would be nice, but 50-70 in 6th in 6s is not too shabby and better than a lot of quite exotic cars.

Have to say I was suprised how quick a C320 AMG was around High Wycombe a little while ago

Dan, here's my rough n ready times taken last night on my own private test track I refer to as the M5;

Gear 4th Range 50-70 Time 3 seconds
Gear 5th Range 50-70 Time 4 seconds
Gear 6th Range 50-70 Time 5 seconds

Gear 4th Range 70-90 Time 3 seconds
Gear 5th Range 70-90 Time 4 seconds
Gear 6th Range 70-90 Time 5 seconds

All taken using indicated speed - no fancy gadgets here!

Wow

So it looks like the mods you are running equate to about 1 second off my (standard) times.

Interesting.

Yeah, would be much better if I had not started the clock until the boost has built up after I'd nailed it - in the order of a half to a second less per 20mph increment, but didn't think this was a fair representation.

Does anyone know how the performance car mags do their in-gear times? Is is measured from a steady speed and then nailing it or when accelerating hard through the gears ?

Hi Nige,

Nice, I would like my S4 to be a whole gear quicker too!

APR Stage 2. So chip and cat back exhaust, right?

What was interesting when we looked at this before was that Dippy's S4 with AMD chip, Miltek exhaust and less restrictive Cats was much quicker.

50-70 4/5/6 2.5/3/3.5

Can only assume that the turbos spool up much quicker with the less restrictive cats.

P.S. Agree the times would be much quicker if you nailed the throttle from say 40, but only timed between 50-70, but I think these are generally done from steady state speed and then start accelerating and timing at the same time.
