not an 'economy run'
but when on an interstate with a 200 mile trip, 65 mph speed limit, and a trooper around every corner, better off dialing in 72 mph and letting her cruise
then observe the mileage over the run
if you get 25+ all is well, if you get 20, you have an issue

it's one thing to push on a back mountain road and another to drive it was stolen 24/7, running around like a 15 year old scalded ape
and any motive system has 2 components, inter-related, output and efficiency

if I were paying $8/gal like you guys (I pay $3.5 for Shell 93) I'd be a bit more concerned, lol

If someone buys a tdi are they not able to accelerate hard? Not allowed to take a corner at speed? Or must they only dote about carefully monitoring their efficiency?

To that end must the rs4 only be pushed to redline on every gear, and accelerate to its max, and cruise at 186 mph on the motorway?

These cars can do many things. They're not always a performance car. See those metal things that open out to the side? Those are doors. Four of them. For four people to get in the car. Maybe five in a pinch. See that big screen with the red back lit buttons? That's a radio/sat nav. Plays music and can tell you how to get somewhere. Should you find yourself on a motorway on a long journey with family, you may be inclined to go 70 mph, and listen to some music. It's ok... We won't fault you.

To that end, here's my best rs4 tank from just such a motorway trip with family...

fuel used 58.01 litres (that's what the tank took after I pulled off the highway to fill up on the way back home) . There was likely about 20 miles more that I could have travelled as there should have been another gallon in the tank. (us Gallons)

miles travelled 345.2
calculated MPG = 22.50
DIS indicated MPG = 22.7 (pretty accurate surprisingly...my b7 S4 DIS was off 10%)

why does mpg matter?
let's say you're paying $8.50 / US gal
and you drive 15k miles per year at an average 20 mpg or 750 gal or $6400! pre-tax almost 10k worth of income
that is not irrelavent to me, I make good money, but don't want to squander it, too hard to obtain to begin with

at $3.50 per US gal, less of a concern, but why waste money or fuel?

I'd rather have a car that can be very rapid AND get >25 mpg on the highway, and I do have that car

I do agree with you in that we own a multi-facetted performance car - not merely a one-trick pony.
A car, that if we were to drive it to it's limits then we'd soon end up with no drivers license, and living in the sticks that is not something I would want to contemplate.
Having said that I could also buy a Hyundai i10 - thrash the @ss of it and lose my license just as quickly.
It's all about responsibility?

I hesitate to say that you've both missed the point, as I'm sure that you haven't, but it it beggars belief when I read posts about people contemplating buying an RS4 and mithering about fuel consumption/running costs. Just make sure you buy a good'un in the first instance, and that car probably will not be found at an Audi main dealer - in this country at least.

on the contrary, a 400 HP V8 that gets over 25 mpg IS good on fuel, it is all relative
and that is part of the beauty of the engineering

imho you do not have the knowledge or skill to appreciate the RS4
you should be driving a 10 year old golf

what is laughable is your judgement of others

analyzing mpg may be a time consuming endeavor for you (breathing may even be a challange) but for most it takes no time other than a glance at a guage while driving or a few seconds of mental enery (in short supply?) while filling up...it's not rocket science

you probably find a household budget or balancing your finances a waste of time too

only the uninformed would buy ANY car without contemplating maint. and running costs
the RS4 is an affordable car to operate, relatively speaking
maint is not bad, and an avg of 20 mpg is not that bad
resale seems good (especially if bought used)
it is an all season vehicle
