Why do you want to switch them off? Don't you think they look cool?

All road cars manufactured after a certain date must have front running lights on when the engine is running and the main lights are off to improve your visibility to others. The Halfords website of all places has some info about it.
Current car: 2007 BMW 530d touring.
Previous car: 2005 S4 B7.

They do, but there are places that require all lights to be off, like when boarding the Eurotunnel trains (at least until 2 years ago...)

Thanks for the info, the law says cars manufactured from February 2011 have to have mandatory DRLs, hence the reason why I can't switch them off....
