From my experience over revs general trash the valves more than the rods. I've seen the remains of an engine that got buzzed in a missed downshift from 5th to 2nd. Ecu readout logged 12k rpm. That being said, quick swap of head and is was running again on track.

Con rods failing apart from the obvious failure due to defect is oil related. Even a trashed set of rings shouldn't fail.

The alarm bells that ring in this case
- only 3k miles since service
- failed not under load.

It would be interesting to see what state the oil is in

Hi ads

It's unlikely they are gonna see what state the oil is in as most if not all was dropped on to the floor. The tech did say today that the bottom end is in a mess, he also told me the potential price of a new engine without labour for fitting......
I look forward to hearing from a few ppl with their estimates before I say.....

OK - I'll bite. Totally unfounded guess, but I'll go £7,800 for the full engine...

Good luck, and hope you get things sorted soon

He told me to expect a figure of around 16k, I nearly fainted! Still can't believe what I thought to be one of the most reliable makes on the road has had a con rod go with no apparent reason?! Been a real bad start to 2013 so far

they should check the oil filter and housing
cut the filter open may show you something, bearing material, etc.

Whilst possible I think a failure of a forged con rod is more likely to be a symptom and/or result of a different problem.

The closeness of the service is too much to ignore - if I had to speculate then I would e looking at te oil to send off and determine what it was. If they had put the wrong oil in then may have contributed to the problem and 3000 miles feels about right for an incorrect oil to start to fail.

Depending on the outcome of the warranty claim, would a possible route be to try and get my money back from the dealer? A couple of friends who are in the trade have suggested this to me and after thinking about it, a rs4 with a new engine could seriously affect the value of the car. If I was to buy an rs4 I would be seriously put off by one that featured a new engine. Anyone have any knowledge or ideas as to whether a claim against the dealer for a car I've owned 4 months and it blowing up is a path I should pursue?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I do often wonder when I see the words "brand new engine" in an ad... it does raise suspicion. The engine is a peach and very robust.

That being said I've never noticed a discounted asking price with the replacement engine cars; from what I've seen sellers actually make a point of stressing it. So I doubt you'll be able to argue "financial disadvantage", esp if Audi have done the work

Personally I'd see a brand spanking factory supplied engine fitted by a dealer and with (probably) a 2 year warranty as a plus point if I was buying a car - with the paperwork to back up the reasons for the replacement I can't see what there is to lose really? No doubt there'd be some paperwork with DVLA to change the V5 to the new engine number, but that's all standard stuff

If I was in your position I'd be pushing Audi for a new engine under the warranty, a decent loan car while it's being done, all your costs to be covered, and something extra thrown in by way of goodwill from the supplying dealer, as a thank you for not taking them to court under sale of goods act

Alternatively you could try to get them to take the car back, but I suspect you'd struggle to get all of your money back as they'd argue that you'd had 4 months use out of the car - but it might be worth rattling their cage over it to encourage them to help you

Only my opinion of course - at the end of the day it's your car and only you know how you feel about the situation...

Personally i would just be happy if they agreed a new engine, wouldn't be fussed about loan cars and goodwill.

Many thanks for all your advice so far. Is there anyone else that may have some advice before I hopefully get some news tomorrow?
