Hi, I went form Sessantas to F1s. Won't be going back.

I found the Sessantas overheated quickly when pushed on some rural B roads. They then lost grip and felt horrible on the corners. Releasing pressure fixed it, but there's no way they should've heated up so much. The last time it happened was on the Snake Road between Manchester and Sheffield. I'm quite confident I wasn't rallying - the roads weren't empty, my girlfriend was asleep in the passenger seat and I had a healthy paranoia of policing on the unfamiliar road. The car was (and is) tracking fine. All I can put it down to was the tyres.

For all the cost difference, buy something better than the Sessantas.

I'd say it really depends on what driving you do i.e mostly motorway / commuting or just weekends / fun toy. If the former then they are ideal, if the latter I'd suggest somethig else like PSS's / F1's

In 3 sets and 70+K miles I haven't had the issues Stu has suggested but then maybe I don't drive as agressively as he does (no offence Stu). The only time I have found them wanting is on the Ring. But then there is cost, durability and superb winter traction due to tread pattern that are plus points that for me offset the lack of utimate grip.

Over the years I've had PZero Rossos, PSS2s, F1s and Sessantas on my RS4.

Worst grip:
Rossos
Best Grip:
PSS2s, with F1s not far behind

Shortest Life:

Rossos
Longest Life:
Sessantas, with PSS2s not far behind

Worst Feel:

Rossos
Best Feel:
PSS2s, with F1s not far behind

Worst Look:

No obvious "winner"
Best Look:
F1s (in 275/30)

Worst Kerb Protection:
PSS2s
Best Kerb Protection:
F1s

Best Cost per Mile:

Sessantas
Worst Cost per Mile:
Rossos

For me the PSS2s have been the "best" tyre, but if the budget is tight then the Sessantas are a clear second choice for me.

there is a thread on the B5 forum at audisrs which is suggesting there is a problem with the sessantas - might be worth a look. I know the initial cause is probably B5 specific but some of the lats posts might be of interest

thanks for all the info guys.its either going to be Sessanta or the F1's.the general consensus seems to be either of the 3 tyres would be better than the rosso's

I've had my Sessantas on for just over a year and about 8k miles. They've worn really well and still have plenty of miles in them yet (rears are probably <half worn). Plus I paid £164 each for mine which is getting on for 100 quid a corner cheaper than the others. They look brilliant IMO and wet grip is superb. BUT, I have to say I have been really quite disappointed with the dry grip. Like others on here, when I first fitted them the dry grip was disappointing but I felt it would improve once they were bedded in. It didn't. Given the bang for your buck equation though I think I'd probably have another set.

What rubbers do S4 B8s typically come with from the factory?

I'd never go back to Sessantas after my new F1's. They're night and day. I'd really wanted the Sessantas to be good but as others have said, they're terrible when warm.
They did have very good wet-grip however.

The F1's are just so much better if your looking for excellent all-round grip and feedback.

Ps. It took a good 1500-2000 miles before the Vredesteins started to grip, then there was a good "window" of maybe 5000 miles before they started to tail-off again.
Yes, they do last a good time but you really only feel safe with them in the wet, bizarrely.

Mine came with continental SC3 tyres. They are bloody noisy but otherwise grip is pretty good in the wet and dry. I am down to 4mm after 8k miles and I have no idea whether that is good or not.

Dunlops as well were a popular stock tire.

PetrolDave - were you referring to Michelin PS2 (Pilot Sport 2)? Or Pilot Super Sport (PSS)? Or a combination of both? I have the PSS tires right now and they're quite good, although lacking in traction from a stop due likely to the large channels.
