I guess mine must have had replacement rear wheels then. They are definitely wider on the rear as the tyre fitter had to reset the tyre removal machine & clearly had 7.5J stamped on them. Ah well they're still within the tolerance for the 225/45 tyres....

Yes - sounds like your rear wheels are the front wheels from a Porsche 968/964? What size is your spare wheel?

Do they have the Porsche part number? They should if they are genuine, something like 964.xxx.xxx.xxx. IIRC genuine Porsche wheels don't exist in 7.5Jx17, they are always either 7J or 9J. So those could be replicas.

Original 968 ClubSport (or 968 with Sport option) wheels were 7.5 on the front (9" on the rear). Note that they were fitted with 225 section tyres lending yet more support to the belief that 245's are way too wide for 7" rims.

Porsche didn't produce a car wearing 7" Cup rims at all. There is good chance the 7" wheel was available from Porsche but only as a 'spare part' winter wheel for 964 model 911's.

Edited to add that genuine Porsche wheels have a width and offset cast into the rim either side of the valve stem, replicas don't.

The front's have got 7 & 55 cast either side of the valve stem. The rear's have got no size casting there so it sounds like these are replicas. The spare is the same as the fronts.

Most replicas are pretty good - i have a set on my cab - but they tend to be a fair bit heavier than the real thinkg.

I've noticed an improvement in the handling since I downsized. No more tramlining.
:) Thumbs up for the Uniroyal Rainsports in the wet too. I got a chance to try them out on the way to Castle Combe & back on Saturday.

What tyre pressures are you guys running - the petrol flap sticker says 39 psi which seems a bit high to me ?

Porsche are mad on tyre pressures. My '90 944T says 44psi in the rear on the inside of the flap. Try running that and you get 3rd gear wheelspin in the wet no problem.

I run 34 all round on my '44 - a 10 psi drop over recommended.

Just to let you know I now have Goodyear F1 Eagles on the front and Dunlop Sp9000's on the back. With 225/45's all round now what was most noticiable was tyre roar from the front which seems to decrease with speed compared to before. Maybe its my imagination but of course car feel better in ride.

Hi there,

With all this interest in the correct tyres for an RS2, I was looking at the tyres on the car I am buying - they look very unused and were put on back in March I think.

I haven't picked the car up yet, but I think they are Dunlop SP8080's - 245/40ZR17 but I can't be sure until next week. The current owner was saying they were the last of the original SP8000s, but I think maybe not. If I've got the spec right, I wonder if they're safe as I've never heard of 8080s.

Glad you've found a nice RS2. Tell us more!

I'm pretty certain that particular type are NOT recommended for use on a the 7 inch standard rims on the RS2 and should be replaced with something more appropriate.

You won't be the first of us that has had to replace inappropriate tyres. Don't take the risk and run with the wrong tyres.

As you will see from the posts on the subject all advice is to change to 225/45/17. I put on SO3 which have been great (in addition I see they won the annual Autocar tests)

Off topic, did you find a solution to your recent problems with the RS2 ?
