I have 997 turbo (from new too), you live and learn with cars like these (into my 4th year of ownership). great car but you cannot use them every day unless you have safe parking at both destinations. If you don't care about your motor, and I guess you do - otherwise you wouldn't be on here, then parking it will become an issue more than you think.

I have both for a reason, so my advise friend is keep your rs as your runner, and look for something special. The 911 turbo was the practical choice for me because I have kids - and the room in the back of 911turbo is the best out there (supercar territory), its also an all weather car. Nothing else comes close. If you don't have kids then its a different story. If you want excuse to go out for the day , having that option comes in handy if you looking for an excuse for a drive out in something special, doing so in the r8, or Aston is lonely.
I test drove both Aston db9 and vantage - sound glorious but service costs are silly money, deprecation was a big issue when I was looking, but I suspect these have bottomed out now, but biggest issue - they are a bit of slouch. Rs6 (modded anyway) will outrun it. I genuinely can't tell if my rs6 (modded) is faster than my turbo in a straight line. Had rs6 been more reliable - I wouldn't have spent my 911 turbo modding budget.
R8 v8s are ok, but you will always want the v10 so I'd hold out for the v10.

Personally I think the petrol engine is done, which is why I'm hanging onto the two classics I have, and have ordered the BMW i8

York, I have company cars to run around in, so parking the Porsche won't be a problem at all. What will though is this...

After a week in a 68 BHP 3 pot C1, I went to get my ''fix' in the RS 6 today, doing a silly speed and out of nowhere... Police.

I was safely in ban territory, and they had it recorded. First thing the copper said was 'Well, that's it mate, you're going to court and you can kiss that license goodbye'.

I was dressed quite smart in my work clothes, did some groveling and told him I know I had been an idiot and have respect for the law hence my clean license but was having a shitty day. After a breath test, he checked all around the car (asked me to full lock the wheels as the car is sitting that low he couldn't check the tread)! The insurance/license/MOT/Tax checks all done.

Guess what? He let me off! Only this once, but said 'You have a really distinctive car, we’re going to keep an eye out for you'.

What a relief, I thought that was it, job, hobby, license would have all gone, scary.

RS 6 put away, back to the C1 tomorrow. :(

I need to get some of them laser parking sensors, losing my license just isn't an option, nor is giving up performance cars...

What. A. Relief.

Jammy, very very jammy.
Every once in a while a decent and reasonable copper, with an old fashioned view of law enforcement, comes into ones life and it's like a ray of sunshine, isn't it?
It's happened to me, only once and in much the same circumstances, but the result was that I revised my thoroughly jaded view of the forces of darkness. They have a job to do that most of us wouldn't and couldn't take on. Many use precious little judgement in their dealings with people but the decent ones, who wear their uniforms rather than being worn by them, if that makes any sense, really do make a difference.
Nice.

+ 1

I too have had this type of encounter, there is a time and place I have found its when most are tucked up in bed, and you know it's safe.

The reality is roads are that busy now it is harder and harder to get that fix, and most officers have no sympathy at all if you take these chances when Everyman their dog is out and about.

I personally find track days knock that edge out of my daily driving, that and the daily thought that something else might break on the rs6. Thus further depleting any savings i can claw back for modding the 911.

The rs6 is no place for a track, but the 911 - that's a different story altogether (that's where it comes alive). The only issue, in a car like this - is the constant thought of getting it wrong - so I have track insurance, and also pick a track with plenty off run off - I'm still not brave enough to push it and my ability to the outer limits ( airfields are best for that). personally I don't push it beyond my capability as it never leaves your mind that its a costly mistake. I've seen a carrera and m5 wiped out and then watched a grown man cry because his car is on finance and had no track insurance.

Which leads me to this - I don't know if I should stop with rs6 mod list ( 6lb volt freeks light weight battery and recaro cs seats, new rims) and loose 100kg and instead use all these funds to buy m3 e46 as a track bitch - I won't mind making a Mistake, as it would be far cheaper than stuffing the 911.

Close call, Amar. I'm feeling waves of relief just reading about it.

Yorkrs6+, you are speaking much sense. I'm about to pull the trigger on an E46 M3 for this very reason.

I was still thinking about it, going over the whole episode in my head as I drove to work in the C1 this morning. I also had an E46 M3 thought too on the drive up, coincidence. See, the reason I am buying a 911 Turbo is that it combines the brilliant handling of the M3, with the power, four wheel drive and the turbo delivery of the '6. The 996 interior was a bit drab, but the 997 interior is perfect so with a Laser Park Pro system, I shall keep the dream alive.

York - I feel a little out of place saying this as you have both cars, but the 997 Turbo is a lot quicker than a C5 RS 6.

A standard gen 1 997 Turbo does 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, the 1/4 mile in 11.4 seconds, that's faster than a 740 BHP C6, never mind a C5. It does 0-100 MPH in 7.8 whereas the C5 is 11.3; tuned with 600 BHP Bam's does 9.3 or something. When driving a 997 C4S, I didn't think it was any quicker than my S8 at the time, until I looked down at the speedo and saw it was doing 20 MPH more than the S8 ever would have on that run, maybe it just hides speed well? Don't think I'll tune it as the whole reason I am buying from Porsche is for the warranty, but I said I wouldn't tune the plus either...

When I drove my rs6 plus, I was very disappointed by its performance, the m5 was better, and sorry to say this- but I'm still chasing that bench mark even now, Having thrown a massive chunk of money at it. I guess my rs is about 530-540 bhp, perhaps 50kg lighter
It's very hard to say which is quicker in a straight line dog fight.
From a standing start for sure the turbo has it dead, where the rs6 is at its best is its 10-60, 50-70, 70-160mph
In that area very hard to say which is faster, through in some twisties - and heavy braking it's good by rs.
But straight line over taking car dog fight - mine for sure would be on my turbos bumper.

I couldn't say about stock setup as I don't think mine was in good form when I bought it, but if my former setup was to go by - no chance.

As I don't drive the 911 very often, i still encounter the same experience as when I first drove it. Each year I threaten I'll sell it - then I drive it - which is why I still it have it now. to keep me interested - it has a few tasteful mods to make it very distinguished from a stock turbo. ill post a pic at some point. I still love it, and gen2 turbo didn't offer any real incentive to warrant taking the hit on depreciation.
