Chains and winter tyres

You'd need two pairs surely? You checked how much clearance you have on the 19s?

4wd and rwd you need 2 pairs.
Only fwd can get away with 1pair really

<beep>. May have to opt for the snow socks then.

With the clack and gos I don't think clearance is a problem as there is nothing on the inside of the tyre, only on the top surface. Could there be rubbing there? They must protrude about a cm over the surface.

I have no idea if I'm correct but have heard that if you have winter tyres and awd, most police will let you through without chains, I've also got a set of vreds in 19 flavour sitting in the garage, either for a last minute trip to the alps or Snowmageddon here.

No - law says you need to carry chains/ socks on mountain roads.

This varies by European countries. I know Germany Austria and Switzerland are quite firm on tyre and chain requirements but I don't think the same exists in France.

In France very often they'll just want to see you have chains or 4wd. Personally, it's not the police/law I'm worried about. That night when I tried to get up to les Deux Alpes there weren't any police there only signs saying we should chain up. The drive up was the scariest of my life, car was all over the place. Was happy to have abandoned it in the end.

According to the AA it says in France you must carry snowchains.

This is what the AA say, but I have read many times this is not true and the AA do this out of an abundance of caution.

Nonetheless the tyres are on order (£680 delivered which is £120 cheaper than any UK website) and chains/socks will be ordered nearer the time if conditions/temperatures warrant it.

Roll on Courchevel!
