Would you use this oil???
I'm sure someone once told me that as long as the oil is made to the same manufacturers specs the brand is irrelevant.
I paid £20 for a 1 litre top up bottle from Audi when the service was done just so I had the same as they had used. I got a Castrol Edge 5/30 Long life bottle. On the back it has a label saying VW504 00/507 00. So could I buy anything that is VW504 00/507 00 and it will be fine???
While doing a general google search on oils I came across this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Long-Life-5w- ... 0485366172. Would anyone buy this and happily use it in their car or is it best to stick to the branded ones???

Anything that meets the spec should work, it's just whether you trust an independent to blend your oil or if you'd rather pay a little more to get a reputable brand. I'm only planning to use Castrol in mine, OEM is recommended for a reason.

No. Firstly because places like Costco can come very close to that price. Secondly because .... Well ... Just no.

I'm more worried about the fact it appears you want to put your pride and joy on a long-life service plan rather than an annual or 9000 mile plan

Re: Would you use this oil???
I've only had the car 2 months and it was on the long life plan when I bought it. I intend on servicing every year with at least 1 other oil change. Just wondered what others do regarding oil. Either stick with the branded ones or go by the manufacturer coding.rich_5259 wrote:I'm more worried about the fact it appears you want to put your pride and joy on a long-life service plan rather than an annual or 9000 mile plan

Put a cheap oil from ebay from a manufacturer I've never heard of into my immensely expensive, high revving 4163cc V8 just because its got a 504 507 Sticker on the bottle? No thanks! Buy a 20 litre drum of Castrol from Opie, job done

Audi oil list http://www.google.com/url?q=http://micr ... JSW5-sA9gQ
any oil that meets the spec and weight is OK
I would not do over 7500 miles per change, but that's just me
a lot depends on service duty
all highway, long trips, 10k miles may be fine
short, in town, oil never gets hot, 5k may be too long
