Drivers information panel?

Post by Stevo » Sun Sep 12, 2004 9:12 pm

I keep getting intermitent missing lines on my drivers information panel and is more noticable when it displays the OK.

Is there a quick fix for this, any others experienced this?

Steve.

You need a new dash, if you have warranty they will pay for it.
New ones are modified. Although this was more evident on pre 99 cars and not so much of a prob with the S4 range.
Not sure if a VAG Comm will allow you to do a final control in word 17 dash panel insert, if so it will show up how bad the display is.
The problem lies with the rubberised connections around the lcd display.

I had three instrument clusters. Its a crazy waste to have to replace the whole cluster for just the DIS. My first one went after 32K miles on a 97 S4. The new one (replaced in 2001) lasted two weeks and went completely mad!! Not just missing lines digits. The third worked ok. All too commmon I'm afraid and I've heard of horror prices of anything between £400 - £800 to replace!

Thanks guys,

Golich, i see your in sunny Aberdeen also :)
The one missing line is bearable just now for the price of a replacement anyways!

What is the easiest and cheapest solution to see what boost pressure im giving out, the car has a APR ECU chip installed.
I've gone for a Samco replacement hose kit and was going to go with the Forge DV's but the guy on the phone asked what boost i was running at so that he could install the correct spring.

Any ideas?

Steve, you are running 1.0bar average on the top ECU map.

I wouldn't bother with the Forge valves as they are costly, no better than OEM for power, can be fragile and require maintainence and the lastest revision Bosch valves last well in the car (at least 12 months) and in my view have a better throttle response. I tried Forge DVs and the hyperboost valves on the S4, both slowed throttle response. There are also storied of bits going west and into the engine = £££ :(

Thankyou David, I'll hold off on the DV's then.
If i go with a warranty with your suggested company, cant remember who it was :(
Will i have to keep the car standard, ie. no samco hoses etc?

I agree with David regarding the DV's. Waste of money. Stick with standard for the boost you'll be running. If you talk to Jim Curley at Star Perfromance, APR were advocating the same advice a year back.

I had Hyperboost on my AMD chipped S4 and thought they did exactly the opposite of what they were meant to do. At £180 I felt ripped off.

Regarding your boost I would have thought you were higher than 1 bar. I say that based on what my AMD remap. I think it was 1.1bar with a 1.4bar over boost. But I could be wrong. Again give Jim a call. You could measure directly with VAGCOM if you have VAGCOM?

I take it you are in Aberdeenshire? You haven't filled in your details. :sekret:

Yep, In Balmedie.

I dont have the VAGCOM and I thought that $399 for a lead at rosstech was a bit steep!

I don't want to re-enter the debate, but you're missing the point of solid-piston DVs. Yes they can reduce throttle response, but often this is because of incorrect spring tension. The purpose of DVs is reliability in terms of air leaks. With a flexible diaphragm DV, a tear can occur resulting in permanent air recirculation. Because the ECU used closed-loop boost control, it would open the wastegates later resulting in extra stress on the turbos. This would not cause loss of performance or DTCs so might be un-noticed for a while until the turbos die.

I know that David checks/replaces his DVs regularly, so that is his solution. But for those who don't, the risk remains.

Regarding the original question, I note that there are quite a lot of instrument culsters available on German E-bay. Not sure if they are different for LHD...

The instrument cluster has been fine for a while now, it just showed the one missing line for a couple of days.

The OCT cluster looks nice with the boost gauge LED's :)

Mine suffers with dropped digits, 1999 model S4, gets worse the longer it's on for. I was quoted £480 plus fitting. Not that bothered about it. If you get a 2nd hand instrument cluster you'll need to buy/borrow VAGcom as the cluster will need resetting to talk to the ECU. Details on AW.

Change of Dash Insert or engine ECU will now req a trip to Centre as key and ECU matching is done online to Germany through GEKO.
Its is no longer possible even for the centres to get four or seven digit numbers from Milton Keynes.

That is from a pre facelift car then. Facelift ones have a digital display with date & time.
