Low speed graunch

Post by dan101smith » Tue Nov 20, 2012 9:25 am

At low speeds (sub-20mph) and with lots of steering lock, there's a bit of a graunching noise coming from under the car - a bit like driving with a welded diff.

Is this anything to worry about? Does it suggest I need to change the oil in the diffs? The Torsen unit is sealed for life, I believe?

It definitely isn't a wheel bearing.

Mine does that mate, but all my cars have made some sort of noise on low speed full lock. I put it down to the 235 width tyres rubbing a little and I just dont use 'full' lock anymore

( but I could be wrong ? )

It's definitely not the tyre rubbing, and it's not from the front - it's the centre/rear.

It could be a "feature" of the S4, or of 4WD in general, but because I bought the first one I saw.....

On full lock at less than 5mph I get a feeling like the diff is locking I assumed it was normal....

Cool, I had a feeling it was a 4WD "feature".

Might check the diff oil levels anyway, before taking it round Bedford GT in a couple of weeks.
