Big Brother

Post by TechNick » Thu Sep 06, 2012 8:41 pm

It's been on the cards for a very long time, but now that this has entered mainstream, please tell me I'm not alone with my grave concerns about where this is all inevitably going to lead...? :(

Well what should the chattering classes expect?

In an age where people find it necessary to give hour-by-hour updates of exactly what they are up to via Twitter or Facebook to anyone or everyone who is remotely interested, telematics is just another means of control.

Be careful what you wish for.

Try going on the run in this country armed only with a mobile phone and a bank card - how far do you think you'd get?
"- probably to the foot of our stairs"

Bah humbug.

What if it 'breaks'? Do they fine you for it not working? What if someone accidentally added a rocker switch to the power feed?

So let me get this straight, they have a clause in these policies that state that if you exceed the speed limits at any point, they have the ability to fine you/increase your premiums live? Jesus effing Christ, makes my blood boil at how some people are agreeing to be bent over a barrel like that, let alone the scummy companies implementing it.

"Speeding" and "1.0Lt Corsa" should be a grammatical error and thus auto-corrected on all future i-devices.

They don't just check the speed, they have g force sensors in so can see if you pull away quick or brake late or corner hard.
He had it fitted cause it made his insurance £2500 instead of £5000. What would you do???????

the gps part will be easy to kill, a £10 gps jammer on ebay will kill it :)

doubt they will enforce it on people on low premiums as the unit fit would be £300+

Yep, have seen those nasty little things that people also claim to use to jam Trackers etc but all they have to do is note mileage etc and then it becomes more interesting to claim that you don't really go anywhere. Also, what happens if you ram someone deep in the batty and there is no time-correct GPS logging to correspond?

Like you say, hopefully it will just be for youngsters/crash monkeys but I wish I had that much faith in the way this health & safety Big Brother society is going.

My first thoughts when he had it was 'brilliant, stops these young idiots thrashing around in their little toss mobiles. Then i thought, sh1te, he will get a faster 2nd car and when the system is removed he will be flying round in a faster car not knowing how to handle it at speed'. I remember having a few odd moments in my 1st car, a pug 205 gti and think it actually helped me be a better driver.
Anyways, his 2nd car is a Honda s type and so far he has been sensible even without a tracking device. His is 18 years old and 6'3'' so he can do what the hell he wants anyway!
