26. mik15(2004), ABT kit, which means 505hp and 630NM, it's been like this since new. Almost 130k km now, first time serviced at 119k km, no debris out of normal. TC error is present for more than 30k km, was for sure there before it bought it, didn't notice any worsening of the situation over time, there is a slight slipping.
I guess I could've kept driving without my lock-up clutch as well if I wanted to, but I can tell you the difference in driving with a new TC was quite spectacular. In fact driving with the clutch disabled all the time is absolute <beep>. Its like driving an old american slushbox. The new TC changed the shifting behavior of the box more than the MTM chip did.
"no debris out of normal" --> well aside from what used to be your TC clutch suspended in the ATF obviously..

Re: Gearbox life survey
mine is not disabled all the time, it has indeed times when it doesn't lock up immediately, i can feel that sometimes it takes a bit until it locks up, but it does, i've done many times live scan watching it and it does engage under hard acceleration, only at slower speeds or when i don't push it i feel like it doesn't lock up. For example, when changing from 2nd to 3rd in D i see the RPM going like 100rpms more, usually only when it's cold, it's not a crisp change like with the other gears, the other thing is when i am doing 45mph in 5th gear and i push it a bit harder, but not to go down to 4th, i can see the rpm going up like maybe 200-300rpms and then i can feel it locks up...this is what i meant by slipping, but i guess this what slipping is..., besides these symptoms i have no other, it changes very smoothly, it downshifts without any shocks, it doesn't hunt for gears or any other gremlins.... i wish i could drive one that doesn't have the TC error so i could have an idea of what it should be...

Re: Gearbox life survey
Every time the car is restarted the TCU will attempt to lock the TC clutch. It will keep doing that until it detects slip (twice)mik15 wrote:mine is not disabled all the time, it has indeed times when it doesn't lock up immediately, i can feel that sometimes it takes a bit until it locks up, but it does, i've done many times live scan watching it and it does engage under hard acceleration, only at slower speeds or when i don't push it i feel like it doesn't lock up. I had some time to observe this behavior when I drove my car with a faulty TC on a 2000 mile trip to Europe to get it fixed.
If you have the code, odds are it will simply not hold much torque. While you baby it, it will lock up and everything is OK. Give it some throttle in higher gears without downshifting and the clutch will not hold. Its pretty easy to check with VCDS. Mine would not hold any more than 300 Nm at 70mph in 5th IIRC. So after you do that, it's going to turn off the TC clutch altogether until you restart the car (although if you keep driving for long enough like an hour or so, I did notice it will eventually try again as well)
But what I noticed with a new TC is that it does not shift up nearly as easily in normal driving when you give it a bit of throttle. Like the TCU is nursing the issue by avoiding low revs.
Truth be told however it does seem like you can drive with a faulty clutch for a very very long time. It will be a bit less fuel efficient and feel a bit soggy but aside from that it's managable if you can live with the idea that it's not quite as good as it should/could be. There are times that I regret fixing mine because although they fixed the TC, they also appear to have damaged a pressure line for the second gear that means that I can't do full throttle 1-2 shifts without slipping clutch pack A

Re: Gearbox life survey
i totally agree with you, this is what bothers me the most, that i know she is not perfect and this is why i have already acquired a new TC in order to replace it this winter. Do you still have the old TC? i have my new one, it's just that i don't know how to check if it's the upgraded one(not sure how true is this) or still the same old model, it's OEM from Audi!
i know a friend here who bought his RS6 C5 back in 2008, from Audi with 16k km on the clock, he drove in 1 year about 90k km and discovered the TC error by mistake while doing a scan and he reckoned that Audi sold him the car like that, otherwise he couldn't see the difference in the way it drives except for a slight slipping, which if you don't really know how a proper one should be, you would maybe think that it's something normal...in the end because he was also obsessed with the idea of having the car not 100% perfect he bought the VB and TC from IPT(not 517) in US, now the car has over 200k km and the gearbox is still strong!

Re: Gearbox life survey
There is no other version of TC. It's all a myth, like DRC v3.

Re: Gearbox life survey
Send the TC and your VB to 517trans Stateside, then it'll be the upgraded one.mik15 wrote:...it's just that i don't know how to check if it's the upgraded one (not sure how true is this) or still the same old model, it's OEM from Audi!
I'm not sure about marrying a new TC with an old 'box, it seems like a mismatch, so when your 'box fails, your TC is fine. When your TC fails, your 'box is fine. It could create double handling but it probably depends on how long you hold onto the car. It's like if you cheated on your missus, so you wash your dick in the sink but forget to wash the lipstick off your neck.
No matter where you go, there you are.
Re: Gearbox life survey
finally drove an RS6 yesterday which had the gearbox recently rebuilt and the TC replaced...i could definitely felt the difference, it feels more tight and when pressing the acceleration there is no delay and the RPM is steady, now i know how it must be
....now thinking of which way to go, have it rebuilt here or have it sent to US, the cons against US would be the higher costs and the warranty, if it goes bad it will be a headache to send it back, we know the pros...on the other hand if i do it here i get the warranty and, of course, if it fails it's easier to sorted out plus much cheaper! I will also go to Audi and see how much do they want for a rebuilt GB! Looking also forward for Dave's first impressions on the 517 trans he's got!
