Hill Hold Assist
Hill Hold Assist
Is this an option people generally add with given the rs4 gearbox or is it more relevant to manuals? 65 pounds in many ways is a rounding error given the rs4 price but was curious what most people opt for. Also does it add weight or is it primarily an electronic system?

Re: Hill Hold Assist
Iirc The hand brake is electronic with fly off ability so hill start assist pretty pointless.
On other cars I've driven with hill start assist it you simply press the foot brake and when you release the pedal the brakes stay on for a fraction of a second

you can still roll backwards ever so slightly in an Auto

True but the B8 has a cursed electronic hand brake...D_K wrote:you can still roll backwards ever so slightly in an Auto

It's is really of no use, never used mine in the A5 as the handbrake does the same anyway.
However I would still get it at £65 quid on a £65k motor for only to cover the blank space, and another option to list when you come to sell.

I didn't spec it on my S4 and after having the car for a couple of months I can't really see the point of it, the car doesn't roll back on hills and if you apply the handbrake you can just drive off and it will disengage itself anyway - mind you it is only 65 quid so if you're not as tight as me you might as well get it!!

I love hill hold assist. I use it all the time and think its the simplest but best little thing on the car for the price. 100% get it.

My wife had a Skoda Roomster 1.2Tsi with DSG which would effectively hold itself on the clutch at a rising junction or traffic lights, then if the traffic didn't move away within 12-15 seconds would release itself and you could roll back. It caught me out once or twice, before I cottoned on - I know that I learned to drive four decades ago - but..........?
On a similar note the DSG box wouldn't change down as quickly as you'd like when approaching a roundabout at say 25mph and see a sensible gap to go for. I used to overcome this by changing to sport mode whenever I reached the 30mph limit. It seems counterintuitive - but absolutely necessary if you didn't want to get caught on the hop. (Cracking little car - only 105bhp but well-matched to the character of the DSG box.
Local VAG dealer reckoned that more than 50% of new cars he sells now have the DSG box ticked on the options list.
Word of warning though - We recently had a RAV4 auto gearbox overhauled as the friction linings had been destroyed by a faulty ecu at 80k - I enquired if they had seen much of the DSG box on high mileage VW-Audi cars - "Seen quite a few at 80k - don't rate them mate......."
Might be worth investing £1k or so for the 5-year warranty if you'd planned to keep it that long?
The current trend for manufacturers is to put the gearbox ecu in the gearbox and in the oil..............what's all that about?

I'm sure there is a good reason... prehaps its a packaging thing. Certainly not electronic issues as engine ECU's generally always a reasonable distance away.

Re: Hill Hold Assist
Sorry missed this
Yes I have specced it
Twin clutch gearboxes do not hold like a conventional auto and therefore when you release it could roll a bit particularly on steep hills and even more relevant when parking on steep hills
We have it on the porker and you don't even know when it is on or off (apart from small light) and is very smooth.

To quote random TV personalities - " 1 million percent yes...."
best value option there is, had it is my S4 and used it ALL the time.
Roll up to lights, stop, brake is applied automatically. Lights change, hit the go pedal and BOOM you're off. no faffinf with handbrake (conventional or electronic).
Also very useful in traffic when texting/emailing...i.e no roll back/forward -

hmm... not the kind of thing you want to have happen when the brakes are hot...carsarecool wrote:To quote random TV personalities - " 1 million percent yes...."

Re: Hill Hold Assist
good point but somethimes you have to apply brakes when hot....i.e. on hill. It also has a "off" button for those anal enough to worry
Never had any issues with the brakes on my S4 and I used it ALL the time. If it was a problem then Audi would have to honour under warranty if you could prove it was the "auto brake" which caused DTV.

It's a 1 for me - for definite.
