HELP - Sat Nav Problems

Post by robscim » Wed Jul 21, 2004 10:44 pm

Can anyone help?

I've got a 2000 S4 2.7 twin turbo with the genuine sat-nav and tv fitted. Driving along either on show map or directions, the unit will, after a while, re-set itself as if its just been switched on. Worse still, when it comes back, sometimes there's no roads on the map, just a blank white screen. (Maybe I've being whisked away by aliens?). This loses the destination if there's one set and I have to re-input it (its not listed on previous destinations).

This is driving me mad as its got to the point where I can't rely on the sat nav for directions!!! :x

Strangely enough, it seems to do it when I go into London but sort itself out when I get back towards West Sussex. Could it be data overload?

I have considered following the instructions on here and re-loading the software but am reluctant to do this unless I have to as I am not that genned up on it and don't want to do further damage or render the system completely useless..

Can anyone help???

Thanks in advance,

Robscim

It could be that you are not getting a good lock with your external gps antenna - you need at least 3 satellites to get positional data - the more satellites the better. Large buildings can partially block the satellite signal, which may be the case in London. Next time you use the sat nav, go into one of the option screens and display the number of satellites you are locked onto and keep an eye on it. It could be that your antenna is failing, or a loose connection somewhere .... or it could be something completely different ;-)

Nige,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, the problem is not that its searching for the satelites, its the unit re-booting itself as if you'd just switched it on. The display says wait while the unit is intialising (or something similar) and then starts. I thought maybe a lose connection for the power but it does it with the car stationnery and as I have just noticed, sometimes there's no map data on the screen behind the arrow showing the position of the car.

Damn strange!

Before I start speaking to the garage (not an Audi dealer, obviously) I really could do with some help!

Thanks again,

Robscim

Robscim,

Have you tried a different data CD? Yours isn't damaged somehow (scratches etc) is it?

You could ask on the Yahoo Groups AudiNav group: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/AudiNav/

ChrisB,

I hadn't thought of that so will take it out and have a look (I've never removed it since I've had the car!

I also read about re-loading the software, preferably with a later version if its worthwhile and possible. I need to re-read-up about it.

I wasn't aware of the group on Yahoo for this so will go and have a look when I get a spear 10 minutes (or hours!!!).

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Robscim
