S4 Turbo Poll
There is always talk of Turbo problems with the S4, to be honest im not suprised, the way things are packed in, the heat build up must be huge!
Any way lets run a little poll, select which best applys to your S4 and its past!

Yes, if your turbos are making a siren sound then they are definitely on the way out.

The term "dentist drill" is not the best analogy but it's then best I can think of. Forget the drill itself, just think about a well-lubricated fan spinning at high revs. There's no metallic part to the sound, which is why sometimes it is described as a "whistle".
AFAIK the siren comes in when the turbine is not spinning steadily resulting in resonance which produces the sound. This is also why it is worse when cold, because the oil has not reached the correct viscosity yet. This is also why a healthy turbo can make a feint siren sound when it is cold, but not when it is hot.
If you do not have any warranty, consider doing something about it soon. The risk is that one of the turbines could rub against the turbo housing and a piece break off. This could then enter the intake and risk engine internal damage. Then it's not just the cost of the turbos you'd have to worry about...

Ok, I have emailed Kim Collins (as he is nearer than AMD) and am going to get them to do my 70k service. And give me a health check, and see if he thinks they are particulary loud....
I guess coming to think about it I guess they do whistle more than a siren.
But I can still hear it when its hot, but not on the motorway when accelarating only pulling out of junctions of when going say under 40. I guess that may give you a indication of how loud they are. After that road noise hides the turbo sound.
Maybe I am worrying after nothing!
I certainly cant really afford the 4or5k it may cost to replace them!

Don't forget that not only do the turbos rarely produce a lot of boost on the motorway, but at high speed the general noise of engine and tyres would drown out turbo noise anyway.
However Kim will be able to give the best judgement.

Mine makes a whistle at low RPM then trails away to nothing.......apparently it's the turbos but having owned three turbo cars I'm not convinced. When the turbos went before it got louder as the turbos spooled up. I think it's a vacuum leak but it passed a QST pressure test. Anyway 47K and still blowing.
