MPG???????????

Post by Rob20vurq » Fri Jul 02, 2004 9:19 pm

My car must be poorly, it gives an initial big blast of power when the turbo finaly kicks in then seems to hesitate and then the power fluktuates, coming and going. It still pulls to the limiter but not like it should.
I've been right through the pipework for a leak but all seems fine. The biggest give away is the <beep> MPG, 20 on a run 16.5 round town, black soot allover the tail gate, bumper!!
Any Ideas??
It has not been chipped.......but it soon will be if no one can sort it.

agree with robo, change fuel filter, air filter and do plugs aswell
do the ipa, air mass meter cleaning trick aswell. always makes a difference.

blacksoot @ the back (i thnik) means unburnt fuel so all of the above can only make it run better .

Agree with above. Fuel filter should be changed not fit for life. Remeber unburnt fuel kills cats

Have your O2 sensor checked or replaced. If this is faulty it will automatically run rich. Chipping it will not fix the problem, you have to make sure it is running 100% before you do any performance tuning.

I think I've fixed it! Had the fault codes read and it came up with lamda probe, checked connection and the bracket that holds the plug was stopping the plug connecting fully, pushed the down plug a bit further and then the connector could click home.
seems ok, off to Bedford in the morning so I'll give the mpg a test! :D

 Well its not fixed!!!!!! I've tried a new lamda, no better!!! Its running super rich!! give it a rev at standstill and it chuffs a cloud of black unburnt fuel out!
I have been told to try the temp sender to the ecu,if it thinks its cold it will over fuel? If not it might be the air flow meter(air mass)?
Any thoughts on these ideas?

No its still <beep>!!!!!!!!!!! still showing -49 with new temp sensor (the white one one the back of the head) and new temp sensor on the water rail (three pin brown) checked wiring to ecu,did continuaty test all ok.
Its looking like an ecu fault!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone live Yorkshire way? it would be nice to try another ecu to confirm the problem!!

Give the S2 forum boys a try as there is a lot of knowledge there.

Rob
Did this come right? Sounds EXACTLY like what I recently went through with smoking on acceleration and soot on the rear bumper (I've just posted my story on the "to MOD or not to MOD" thread. As I said, I don't know whether it was the lambda sensor of the modified chip, and it might have been both...! Running beautifully now, except without the kick.
