THE SITE

Post by Bushy » Fri Jul 02, 2004 5:01 pm

Well I felt I should post my opinions, so please feel free to slag them off or agree as required

After now being on version 2 for some time I personally think, great integration with all the areas, definitley an improvement

However I find I am getting fed up while I am here due to speed of refresh or reload. My ideal browsing is go to a section, read a thread, maybe not post, select back, then choose another thread. Well this is just too slow so I get fed up and browse other sites

I understand why it is slow as the database does a refresh command instead of just showing the previous image without any additional posts, I ask if this can be removed to increase site speeds

I mean I am on a 1MB cable connection!

I think this reason has made the number of posters dwindle and even heavy posters like myself are not here so often

I welcome comments

PS _ For all the hard work that has gone into it, I apologise for those who may think I am having a go, I am not, just trying to be constructive for the sites future

We had a few reports regarding speed, but this is the first time in a long time that it has been brought up.

We will look into it again, and see if the problem is indeed at our end. I still think it may be due to proxies.

You could have made your poll a little more possitive by adding - "Site is not slow, what you on about!!" - So I added it for you :P

Doesn't put me off, just I'm very busy with work at present so don't get as much time to keep an eye on the posts.
Consequently I now click on the 'view posts since last visit' and just have a scan of what is going on.

I agree that sometimes the site takes a while to update (I'm on Broadband) but it is still significantly faster than other car/bike sites I look at.

Bottom line, the layout of the site doesn't put me off as I still like to read what the rest of you lot are up to

If you had the chance, how would you improve things to better suit your requirements ?

Cheers, :beerchug:
John.

Chaps, I'm a web techie, as you boys know, that's what I do. I think the site speed is good, I've got (shhhh) 10Meg Broadband at home and the site like most others flys!
My only concern with the site is that sometimes seems to forget what posts I've read and what posts I haven't

Dunno if you are running zend optimiser, but in the past I've used that and it can make a real diffference to php, if the problem is with the php code then this may work, if the prob is with the database then perhaps that can be optimised

I have cut my visits. TOO SLOW ( as I have posted it on many times) Less fancy but faster is my choice.

I have found that there was an option to enable caching of the forum to reduce compile times.... This was enabled, but hadn't been setup correctly and therefore wasn't functioning.

I have fixed it, and it should speed things up a little. Please let us know if it has made things better.

Does seem slightly faster, but not as quick as I personally would like, no point having broadband? and compared to other sites

Well done, but sorry

Nothing quite like an one of the Admins moaning like an old woman!! I think it's your sig mate, we'll have to sort out a pure text version of the site for you.

Now I've activated compression to the whole site, seems faster still to me.

Well I'm having problems now..... I do not always get all the images displayed. I've made some network changes at my end which could have affected it, anyone experiencing the same thing?
