RS4 Grille

Post by ajsl » Fri Jun 18, 2004 4:39 pm

I've decided to pick up a RS4 grille for my silver S4 saloon, (I'll be putting the S4 badge on it).

Has anyone mounted the S4 badge (old style) on a RS4 grille, if so how did you do it? I've read the Audiworld tech article on one approach, but that method seems to rely on a specific bit of metal from a US based DIY store.

Oh, and what do you guys think of the RS4 grille on an S4, a bit pretentious/aspirational or not?

I have the RS4 grille on my S4 and I think it looks great. I removed the new brushed metal look surround and replaced it with my existing 'Chrome' look surround off the old grille. just need to try and do something with the lower bumper inserts now...

I attached my badge using a modified (bodged!) badge holder that came with the new badge..
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.

I have just fitted a rs4 grille from vagparts.com very cheap and I think improves the cars looks a lot in my opinion, as Sitas3 says I need to find something I can do with the lower bumper grilles, as they now look wrong....

I will take some pix of the new grille and put them on my website at the weekend if anyone wants to look ?

I've now added the grille, and I think it looks damn sweet :)

Here's a pic of the two grilles together (the RS4 is the bottom one):

Here's the end result:

And here's the original grille :

The install was really easy, a simple click-out click-in job. Though as the write ups all say.. make sure you put the bonnet release through the appropriate hole first!

To fit the S4 badge, I trimmed the top of the plastic tab on the back of the badge until it fit flush and then drilled a hole through the tab and used two brass motherboard standoffs (I used these as they wouldn't rust) screwed together behind the grille to stop it being pulled off. Though to be honest you could just leave it in there as it fits quite well.

Two things immediately strike you about the RS4 grille, firstly the surround is a brushed aluminum sort of look rather than the chrome of the S4, and secondly the actual grille is black rather than the matte silver look of the S4 grille. The combination of the two really makes the S4 badge stand out (IMHO).

In the end I'm really pleased with the look, it's quite subtle and the average punter probably wouldn't notice it, and I think the brushed aluminum edging looks great on my silver S4, though I'm not sure how it would look on other colours?

I got the bits from Martyn at VagParts (he was really helpful by the way) Around £33 for the grille and £11 for the S4 badge. I could've used my original badge but I wanted to keep the stock grille and badge in case I messed it up. It also means I can revert back to stock very easily.

Cheers,
Alex.

If anyone is interested, I have a new style S4 badge already modified to fit the RS4 grille - as new condition - £10 incl. P&P (within the UK).

Send me a pm if interested.

Nige.
