Looking for some help !!

Post by garry » Wed Jun 16, 2004 12:57 pm

If anyone can give me some advice then it would be much appreciated ?

I have a RHD RS2 that I'm having a couple of niggling problems with, and despite having the diagnostocs checked and speaking to a couple of specialists, I don't seem to be making much progress. The only option that I have is to potentially enter into a bottomless pit of investigation and expense with finding the fault.

So here goes.

The car seems to hunt for an idling speed when the car comes to a stop, which seems to be worse after a period of say 30 minutes of motorway driving. It does hunt also when you are just driving around town and therefore changing gear more regularly, but it is not as bad then. I have tried to bring the car to a stop in neutral to see whether there is any problem with the clutch, but it happens even when a gear is not selected. Sometimes the revs drop so low that the car cuts out, whether or not the clutch is engaged or if you are in neutral. Once it finds the idling speed of around 800 RPM it is fine, and it doesn't hunt above this level, just below ?

I suspect a fuel problem, and the diagnostocs that I had done yesterday said 'Fault 1 00561 Mixture Adaption Limit (MUL) not reached' ?

I also need to get a resistor for the heating system, as it works on full but not on 1,2 or 3. Does this sound like a sensible place to start ?

If anyone can help or has had similar experience with these niggling problems then any help would be fantastic.

Thanks

Garry

Hunting for correct idle speed can be caused by a faulty idle control valve.
No idea on the heating.

I had the same heating problem on my corrado.

There is a thermo fuse that protects all of the fan speeds appart from number four or max.

Try to replace the fuse, it is soldered in possibly behind the connector block on the fan.

The fuse kept blowing on mine so i just put a wire in place of it, risky I know, but it worked and didnt catch fire.

Thanks for the pointers. I think that I might leave the suggestion for fixing the heating and try the resistor, but thanks anyway.

As a bit of a layman how would I go about cleaning the idle control valve myself ? Hopefully it is something quite straightforward ?

remove valve ( i hope you know where it is)? by undoing 2 clamps, remove the plug then slide out of the rubber sleve.

when off spray carb cleaner in the 2 holes hopefully lots of oily/black/grey dirt will come out, keep cleaning until it looks new inside.

heres the tricky bit! you need to power the unit up,
i used a 12v booster pack but you could use a car battery

run 2 wires to each terminal on the valve when it powers it will open when disconnected it will shut

do this open and closing action whilst spraying till clean hopefully the liquid will run clear. (just like the turkey at crimbo)

finally give it a shake to get rid of all that carb cleaner then let it dry for a while.

beware carb cleaner it very flammable be careful when using the battery for sparks.
