and if you can, have a go at seeing how much a 1 or 2 day trip to Uluru AKA "Ayers Rock" will cost ya. Don't go for the big resorts, just go and camp, it's only 1-2 nights and it'll be unforgeable, one of the most amazing night skies you'll ever see. Don't leave the bookings too late, you'll get raped on price. Us Aussies love a good raping.

It's one of those things, you can only get a work permit for Oz up until 28/29 for the English. But the later you leave it, the harder it is to just sell up everything you own and travel. It's a big decision for some, it's a no-brainer for others.
I don't any that have regretted it.

Yeah, it'd be faaaarken hot but if you only did a day trip (one night), you'd not forget it. The dusk and dawn there are such amazing moments.

I'd have to say having been to both a number of times I'd rather go to Kiwi land rather than Oz but neither are perfect. Oz; lifestyle good / great, weather great, economy poor, politics / racsim appaling and if you are going to emigrate do it for the rest of your life as you'll be broke coming back to the UK such is the state of the exchange rate. That's why bam and others are over here to make as much as they can here as it is so much more than they can over there. And what breaks there were for Brits to go to Oz will soon be pulled when LAFHA is scrapped in the summer unless you are on the wanted list like nurses and teachers.

Sydney is OK but the powerhouse economy in Oz is going to be Perth for the next 10-15 years and it is already more expensive to live decently there than it is in Sydney and on the rise becaue it is still a small city; prices will exceed London living soon and beat Beijing and HK. Great if you are in oil & gas, mining of construction but the economy is entirely reliant on these industries at present. Canberra as much as it is the capitol is just a town planners wet dream.

Add in Taipans, Crocs and Black Widows and extortionately expensive European cars unless you like Holdens and Fords and there are as many pros as there is cons. Aussies are Awesome at promoting their own awesomeness granted....

I'm not so sure about a poor economy though, it appears to be in rude heath compared to elsewhere. The big three banks are granite-like in stability and Australia didn't go into recession.
Still, it's a great place to visit...

My thoughts re the economy too. Certainly I know people in my field earn a whole lot more in OZ than they do here unless you are a specialist. Heck even in NZ people are getting paid on par or more in many industries.....not the finance or IT industries but certainly in Engineering (real Engineering not boiler 'engineers' etc they are not real engineers ) and Construction.

Need to book myself a holiday for next month, it's free through work but Aus or NZ not on the list, probably going to be Jamacia/Dom Rep/Kenya or the USA for a 14 day roadtrip with the added bonus of being able to bring myself back some cheap arbs

I don't think there's any current Internet censorship in Oz but in theory the government has the power to enact one. Any government would have to push full control through the senate, and that would be immensely difficult, almost impossible. It would the death of the party that attempted it, can you imagine how unpopular they'd be? Do think they'd get ANY votes from the male population if there was no internet porn?
Road laws are pretty strict and police presence pretty high, plus there's been a lot of technology on cop cars since the 90s. The filth can ping you speeding in opposing traffic, they have speed cameras on their cars. Plus, speed cameras are not signposted nor their location revealed to the public. Drink driving has been rife in Australia since, well, forever, so there are random breath tests all the time.
You can still have fun on the roads, it's a big country and the rozzers can't be everywhere.
