Enabling LapTimer and OilTemp by VAGCOM

Post by R1NGA » Thu Feb 23, 2012 7:53 pm

Folks,

Having received my new HEX-USB-CAN cable and upgrading to the latest release of VCDS, I embarked upon the 3 popular update mods for our cars - Battery Meter, Video-in-Motion and the Laptimer/OilTemp option. The first two went without a hitch, but I'm struggling with the Laptimer/OilTemp thing and this is the only one to use the Longword Code Helper thing.

All goes fine until I hit the "Do It!" button, when it tells me that the Re-Code is invalid and gives me three choices, two of which sound like a perfect opportunity for me to break something permanently! So I take 3rd option and Cancel instead.

Here is the info from the Ross-Tech site (amongst others) detailing the 3 simple steps;
5 - Oil Temp & LapTimer.jpg
And here are the steps I go through the get to the error message;
6 - S4 LongCoding.jpg
Tick the LapTimer Box and Exit the Longcoding screen
7 - S4 Recode Instruments.jpg
New Longcode now shown in the New Coding field.
8 - S4 Re-Code Invalid.jpg
8 - S4 Re-Code Invalid.jpg (18.63 KiB) Viewed 2326 times
And this comes up when I click Do It!

Any ideas?

I did this on mine without issue.

Mine if also 0D in that byte.

Sorry but I don't know why it doesn't work. Nothing's obvious so it may be worth dropping a line to RossTech.

Thanks, have mailed Ross-Tech as suggested and perhaps they have a view.

Have info back from the (very helpful) VCDS resellers in the UK, Ilexa;

"The importer and equipment numbers are zeros in your controller, and many controllers require non zero values when changing codings etc.

VCDS will enter standard values in the boxes. These values don't actually affect the module and are only used to record the last dealer who worked on the module"

So seems I should be safe clicking YES to get that fames OilTemp and LapTimer facility.

Good news :beerchug:

Strange you didn't have the values though!

I actually clicked NO, which used 0000's for the values and it worked just fine. So we now have LapTimer and OilTemp as well - wicked!

Yeah but what VCDS normally does is grab the previous values and when you make your changes it posts then with the grabbed values. This therefore makes it look like the dealer did it rather than someone with a laptop and some software.

Then again my dealer knows I make loads of changes and they'll cool with it.

I hadn't really appreciated the history data that WSC, Importer and Equiptment codes represent, but my dealer I think will be sympathetic, as the car will soon have the ceramics off my RS6 fitted and they know these are coming.

Anyone tried the Passenger-Door-Mirror-Turn-Down-when-Reversing VCDS mod?

Yep - works fine and automatically goes back up to.

You can't choose the dropped position (you need memory seats etc for that) but I find the angle fine.

I also tweaked the speed it rises to be 8kmph instead of 15 as when I pull down my dirve it would just hit 15 then pause. Now it's fine.

Scotty - the screenshots here show a slightly different layout of the Bits and Bytes, ie: no checkbox as I found when enabling LapTimer etc. In this shot, Bit-3 seems to be the one to change, somehow, in relation to the the mirror turndown, yet Bit-4 in the coding is the box that has been updated?

Is it obvious when I get there (not looked for real yet)?

Thanks

Yes. I think it's just some screen shots dont show them. I think mine did as I don't recall anything weird.

Mine has exactly the same coding as the second pic.

p.s. The above is obviously from a country where they drive on the wrong side of the road. It should say that it only works if the mirror selector is set to the passenger mirror which is our case is the left one....if you've got a RHD!

Scotty (or anyone else who can answer)...

Finally got round to looking to do the Mirror Turn-down mod, but realised I don't actually know which module this is in. Any clues? The shots are from the B8 A4/S4 Wiki and kinda assume you know!

Thanks,
Phil

Finally gotten round to doing the mirror turn-down mod - it needed a very close shave with a kerb to make me do it however! So just in case anyone needed the info in this thread;

VAG-COM Module 52 - Door electrics
Coding - 07
Long Code Helper

... and this is what I saw;
91 Mirror TurnDown Before.jpg
As it left the factory
Clicked the Mirror Turndown Bit;
92 Mirror TurnDown After.jpg
Bit now set and new code created
The <ESC> to get back to the Module and hit "Do It!"
93 Mirror TurnDown Apply.jpg
Simple as that.
Job done - sorted! Works a treat. Gotta love free stuff that someone in a German suit thought you didn't want....
