Advice - RS6 sedan or A8 W12 SWB?
Advice - RS6 sedan or A8 W12 SWB?
I'm fortunate enough to own an RS6 and have a father that owns a fully spec'ed A8 4.2. both approx 10 months old.
The RS6 is owesome, but usually only when passengers remind me. The problem is the 450bhp is overwhelmingly is biggest attribute, but you simply get used to it. I wouldn't recommend the drilled disk option though, just come back from 2 weeks skiing with car left on drive. The internal surfaces of the drilled holes had corroded and expanded out onto the disc surface or welded themselves to the pads where in contact with them, I think I now need new pads and possibly disks at only 8K!. Other than that and the wheels being absolutely F****d, it's great.
When I'm doing a long journey, say 100 miles plus with passengers, about once a month, I swap for the A8. A sublime vehicle. No faults at all after 10 months and 9000 miles and has all the toys. I'm 40 and my dads 70, if I had to choose one and stick to it I'm ashamed to say it could well be the A8 4.2, haven't even considered a W12.
I'm now looking to change my RS6 Avant (No idea why anyone would even think of buying a saloon) and I'm contemplating a Cayenne, there doesn't seem to be any other natural replacement for an RS6 Avant or have I missed something?
Any suggestions or comments?

I think you are right, but apparently the residuals of the Cayenne are also headed southwards as fast as those of the RS6.I'm now looking to change my RS6 Avant (No idea why anyone would even think of buying a saloon) and I'm contemplating a Cayenne, there doesn't seem to be any other natural replacement for an RS6 Avant or have I missed something?

Well you might like to consider the Maserati Quattroporte. Remember there is a lot of 'Audi' in it. Other alternatives are the Bentley Continental GT or the VW Toureg V10 TDI.
Driving a VW Cayenne is NAF! No that is not a misprint, it might have a shiny Stuttgart badge on it but its a Volkwagen, why drive the imitation when you can buy the real thing!

Isn't the gearbox supposed to be it's biggest let-down? Evo mag reviewed it and said it had great handling, wonderful revvy engine and buckets of style, but they just didn't like the gearbox. In fact, I think they may have even asked (rhetorically) why it can't have a decent traditional auto box like an Audi or Mercedes...Nordschleife wrote:Well you might like to consider the Maserati Quattroporte.
Thanks for all the advice - what has surprised me is the 'cool' response the RS6 has recived on this Forum. Where I expected a very pro stance, it seems that once the thrill of twin turbo 450bhp has worn off, the car seems to loose favour... hmmn, strange.
I am still going to borrow the RS6 from my dealer for an extended test drive at my own leisure but if I do go with an Audi option, I think a custom colour and trim W12 is the route I'll go.

Perhaps because the RS6 is like some hugely powerful & fast athelete, with a huge appetite, with the face like the back of a bus, and as much charisma as Englebert Humperdinck!!!

...and this is the opinion of someone who is advocating the new BMW 5 series?PP wrote:Perhaps because the RS6 is like some hugely powerful & fast athelete, with a huge appetite, with the face like the back of a bus, and as much charisma as Englebert Humperdinck!!!

Without going too far off topic, the Bangle BMW's are not my cup of tea and if the new M5 is going to follow the style of the concept and showcars, then it is a huge let down. BMW are on a downhill slide in both styling and customer service and while the RS6 isn't the most outrageous car to look at, it is one of the few 4WD sedans on offer with an excellent dealer network supporting it.
Oh, and as for the Maserati, having driven a 4200, I can honestly say they have the build quality of a Lada - if that wasn't bad enough, the styling of the Quattroporte is just awful. Both it and the Ferrari Scankletti (oops, sorry Freudian slip) are two of the worst looking cars that have been produced in decades!
