Just been reading a thread on another forum about drc, it said that all rs4's have been recalled by letter for drc replacement, how come Audi uk is not the same? They were saying the replacement shocks have been improved?? Also this was going on until 2012. It's crazy that the uk is not the same.

Us consumer law is a wee bit stronger than uk. I think they have specific mention that if x proportion of sales have the defect its a recall (or something like that)

Or it's just the threat of the financial risk if you get a class action suit...

Personally I think a full on recall is ott as te failure rate and implications of a failure are not high enough.
However on the other hand I don't think there should be any resistance to replacing a defective shock FOC

Brett, Tyneside have the Gen II DRC tool as they did my car with it some 3 years ago. It is shared between the North East dealers who are all the same group. Could also be the CV boot joint, mine split and needed replacing shortly afer my DRC was replaced and I thought DRC had failed again.

Brett,

I posted at the beginning of this thread saying that I had a similar problem. I have just had Audi pressure test my system and it was low.
As a result that are replacing the 2 front shocks on the good will scheme as this is where the noise is coming from. they also said that just before it hits its 5th b day to come in and they'll pressure test it again for free and if low they'll replace the rears.

Its all about pressure, if its low then you have a problem. If they offer to recharge it that might just prolong your problem as it will lose the pressure again surely.

Get them to test it. It also very much depends on the dealer, it shouldn't but it does.

Get the whip out! :FIREdevil:

Just an update. Picked car up today they told me they cannot hear any noise and everything looks ok underneath. I took the workshop manager out first speed bump knocking noise he said he could not understand how the technician never picked it up! I think he just had a spin about at my expense. It did it all the way on the little drive. He was very reluctant to try goodwill saying where is it end locating the problem? He had just told me all bushes and ball joints looked fine, which only leaves the shockers. In the end he is going to try Audi uk on Monday. I'm holding they come through ok, the car has had all work done through Audi. I hope they come through ok. I will keeps you updated when I hear from them. Fingers crossed....

Does it make a noise if you wiggle the steering wheel with the engine off?
(might need to be quite 'vigourous')

Hi ads I've just tried it yes it does make a noise when engine is off. What could this mean? Tyne side Audi are trying goodwill on front shockers tomorrow anyway but what could this noise mean? Should it not make any noise wiggling the wheel?

Could be that the pressure is lower than it should be? That might explain the lack of leaks and the knocking.

I asked if they could check the pressure because if it was low that would make sense, but they said if it was low the valves would chatter at the rear of the car? It just seemed like they did not want to do it. I should hear back tomorrow but thee service up to now has been a bit iffy at best. Fingers crossed

Aha! Well worth trying this little investigation then.
Easier with a helper.
Pop the bonnet and remove the cover that's marked as a battery cover below the windscreen.
Look under here and you should see ecu number 2.
Below this is a large bolt - not sure but 12-13mm at least.
Get helper to wiggle the steering wheel.

This bolt is one of three that secure the steering rack in place.
very common on the whole a4 b7 platform for this bolt (or one of the others) to loosen.
If loose you'll see it move as the steering is moved - this is the knock you may be hearing.

Correct fix is to replace all three bolts as they are stretchy single use items and can't be retightened.
Torque is something like 40lb +90 degrees but will check.

This completely cured my problem - if you want I can take a picture tomorrow am to show the bolt.

Here's the thread on my old issue including diagram

Bolts marked 2 are the top ones and the other I think is number 6
