Could be that the ECU has adapted to your driving style and turned the power down, would be interesting to know how much power the engine is actually giving out.

At risk of wrecking your fuel economy you may choose to do the left foot braking trick, steady throttle in a high gear and give a dab of left foot braking and at the same time nail the throttle into the carpet. did this on mine and the engine note changed, the engine felt a lot punchier = lower fuel economy = more fun

Or it could be your car has been re-mapped?

I dont understand how you all get such dismal fuel economy either, do you have any self control ??

When I bought my S4 the seller told me his missus could get near 40mpg on a good run ( bearing in mind the engine needs to heat up properly and that probably takes 15 - 20 mins of driving anyway ), I laughed a bit and apologised to him but I thought it was just patter, however on my 200 mile trip home I averaged 35mpg and that was with a few quick squirts when the road cleared.

I reckon I could win this one lads, let me get my dog collar, nervous friend and classical chill out CD and I will see what I can do

Is your a Tip? What was your average mpg? To get anywhere 35mpg over 200 miles with a few blasts in between you need the following conditions:

Less than 60mph
No stops or breaking whatsoever
Tiptronic
Few short blasts.

These car are not engineered in any way for such economy even though they could be a lot better if the gearing were not so pap. 70mph @3.5k for a 4.2l V8 is a joke. A 70mpg cruise should be about 2k rpm

No its a manual, probably 90% of my journey home was trundling along in motorway traffic and I dont use my brakes on motorways unless absolutely essential ( I was always told to watch the car 3 cars infront and take your foot off the throttle when you see his brake lights ) works a treat for me.

A number of short squirts from 70 upwards ( Im not sayin anythin else on that matter )

And the seller didnt mention any remap to me so dont think so

bear in mind I used to drive a non turbo ford escort diesel many moons ago and you had to keep your driving smoove, everyone should be made to drive a shahite car that doesnt accelerate to learn how not to stop at junctions/roundabouts or use your brakes, did me a world of good

I'm sorry but 35 mpg from the 4163 V8 is absolutely impossible - even if it was the longer geared Tip. 66 litres at 35 mpg is 500 miles! The only chance you'd have of achieving 500 miles would be 30 mph in sixth on cruise around Millbrook all day

DIS might be telling you 35, but it ain't doing it! Next time you fill up, brim the tank and work out manually what the mpg is from the miles and litres.

Depending what the weather is like I might go for a economy record Sunday going down to Ace Cafe. Filled up early tonight in preparation for Ace Cafe straight from work Sunday, got less miles from last tank as I've not done as many long journeys

Thats how I calculated the mpg, filled to the brim and did it again when I got home, I couldn't get the dash indicator to say anything other than 17.2mpg ( it was in the wrong setting )

I dont trust any dash indicated mpg anyway because regardless of car I have not had an accurate one yet, its good as a guide but thats it

What fuel are you all using ?, I used Shell V power but if you are putting in dirty supermaket shahite in that wont help.

Can I suggest if you have over 50k on the clock also try running 10k boost through your intake system, I have used it on every car I have had and it does exactly what is says on the tin

What was your average speed when you achieved the calculated 35mpg? and How far was the journey? Do not take any offence with the constant querying by myself and others but after 6yrs of ownership, yearly servicing and not using supermarket petrol I have not once seen such frugal figures from a poorly geared V8.

I regularly drive to Hamburg, approx 70miles, and for most of the journey they have been widening the autobahn so the majority of the drive is through roadworks at 50mph and I have never seem more than 27mpg indicated on the DIS. I have done this journey at the crack of dawn and late at night. I.e. when traffic volume is low = little need for braking etc.

Without being rude, you might have slipped up with your calculation. 66 litre tank is 14.537 gallons (4.54 litres per gallon). I only ever see 300 miles when I run the tank dry *AND* I'm doing long journeys in good traffic. V Power every tank without fail - only Shell. How many miles did you get?

As probably mentioned earlier in this very thread, my greatest was 328 miles before 65.5 litres, 22.75 mpg. Yes thats 65.5 litres from a 66 litre tank. Would like to add this was in France in daylight, two lane peage with hard shoulder and pair of 5 litre fuel cans in the boot, in convoy with others etc, knowing exactly where the next Shell was (heading south, 2 miles before you turn off the peage at Abbeville en route to Rouen - and Le Mans)

Would love to find how much the tank actually holds as some people believe it is 66 litres plus a 7 litre reserve.

To answer some more questions, firstly my calculation is below

Journey 210 miles from car pick up to garage to fill no stops

Topped up before we left ( giving the car a little shake to make sure it was brimmed )

Most of the journey home was 50 - 60 mph ( lots of average speed cameras and cones as usual but traffic flow was constant )

Floored it a couple of times for approx 7-10 seconds ( thats when the missus kicked off ), then coasted speed back down.

Re brimmed at garage at a cost of £36.98 ( a little over 26 litres if I recall )

Arent these engines handbuilt ? could I have a nice one ?

( its just I remember getting 50mpg out of a ford escort 1.3 'four up' on a 600 mile round trip years ago and it was suggested the engine was a 'blueprint' version and therefore performed better than the normal production run engines, or maybe I just have some sort of gift )

As I said before I will go for a jaunt again and double check, if it makes you feel better on my recent blast into the dales I averaged 15mpg !!!
