RS2 service

Post by alastairg » Fri Apr 30, 2004 12:23 pm

Well the RS2 survived its first service ( Autowerks Edinburgh excellent )
Some questions arising from this, further time with the car(wonderful) and forum gazing
1. Gentle knock on full lock persists. Topmounts renewed at service ?wishbone ball joints ? anti roll bar drop links
2. Old reciepts show 968 MAF in last 12 months ? correct for car ? If not causing no MAF related symptoms So OK?
3. Gentle ? drivechain movement on changing gear in traffic at low speeds, just enough to notice and ease clutch gently during last part of travel to engage next gear. Similar to S2 but more noticable ?? rear diff mounts
4 Pressure gauge/ext temp due failed senders Service suggested that the pressure sender has assc valve that can be set to stop all oil returning to sump from head. Never heard of this. Any views ?
More to follow I know how you all like a challenge!!

1. Is it a continious knocking on full lock? If so - that could be a CV joint - although I don't think this is a common problem. Probabyl lower ball joints - but these would be picked up at an MOT. Wisbone bushes also go quite quickly - Can you find any receipts to show the last time these were changed?

2. It would be interesting to know if the 968 MAF has the vanes on the inlet side like the RS2 ones.

3. It could be the front snub mount that is causing engine lift. You can adjust the bracket it lifts upto - this is under the small aux radiator - just push it hard down onto the rubber snub mount.

4. The temperature sender is at the front, under the block - going into the oil pump - this should have one wire attached to it - easy enough to change. The Oil pressure gauge sender is the larger of the 2 senders on the side of the block under the water manifold - it should have 2 wires going to it - these wires can easily get pulled off.

I don't know what stops oil running back from the head!

Cheers Doug You spend your life on these forums!!
I know nothing about 968 MAF but I guess its OK, as you would not put one on on a whim, I guess. As I say only have reciept for its purchase so could be red herring
Gentle knock on lock only once on moving off from stationary ie usually as I reverse into parking space
Oil return from head to sump ? a valve that can stop all oil draining back to sump Didnt get all details from service

There is not one return hole from the head - there are multiple return holes that go through the head - I'm not sure if they all run through the block and then through one channel - My block is in a machine shop so can't have a look for a couple of weeks.

The 968 MAF might work -, like the RS2 works in an S2, but some calibration is needed to swap S2 and RS2 - I don't know about the 968MAF - You could always check the (bosch)part number - it might be exactly the same as the RS2 part number.

And yes - I spend too much time on the forums - It's the only Audi fix I get while my car is in bits - My A4 diesel doesn't do it for me!
