Double Din Face Plate Adapter
Double Din Face Plate Adapter
Hi All,
Car is booked in to have the stereo installed and they are putting the Head unit and DVD player in the Dash.
Does anyone know of a decent 'face plate adapter' that will house to single din units and still look factory ?
I am worried that this will let the install down. Would be even better in Piano Black to match the inserts.
Car is 2000 RS4.
Do Audi do them ?
Thanks,
Tom

I made mine out of MDF and bought a thin film of carbon look plastic to effectively give me the option to see if I like the finish.
Have a look at mine in the gallery, so far I am pleased enough not to wish to change it.
I was quoted over £300 + VAT to have one made, this one took me few hours and cost 15 quid in parts.
I have the templates I used if you wish to borrow them, I'll hopefully make the 28th meeting but managed to drop my Honda onto my left leg
on Sunday and am feeling rather sore and the clutch in the RS4 really hurts just now!

Can't beat a bit of boost!
Just a thought, if you are after piano black why not go to a joinery shop, I know one who would do it, get a piece of MDf and laminate some high gloss black laminate on it, I am sure this would abe a very close match to piano black
Where are you based mate, maybe we could get a template and meet up to check it against a sample laminate
Cheers

Thanks Guys,
Bushy, that sounds like a cracking idea !, not thought of that.....
I am based in Gloucestershire, but flat out a t the moment with work stuff. If either of you guys have the template and can either fax, or send me the dimensions - that would be really cool. I'll look into local laminate shops today, if that fails bushy, I might just take an afternoon off and see if we can meet up.
What depth MDF did you use and how did you attach it ? clips ?
Thanks again.

FORMICA
I am getting a sample through today of Gloss Black Formica Laminate - I will put a shot in my gallery of it against the piano black inserts to show the match..
Any news on the Template guys, thickness of wood, how you fixed it etc - sorry to be a pain - but will save me <beep> loads if I manage to make the unit prior to going to the car hi-fi centre....
Cheers

Tom, have a look in my gallery. I have a similar install to Bushy, and you migh be able to get an idea of how it was done.

I'll add my template to my gallery if I can work out how to do it.
Remember now that I had to cut small amount off top left and right corners as well as cut a groove in to each side near the climate controls so the MDF part actually fits. I countersunk 2 screws in to factory holes that hold the top of the climate panel on, using longer screws. Then the finishing panel clips over the top, I haven't glued it yet so I think I can take it out quite easily, as headunit and valentine1 remote display provide enough hold on the front plate to the MDF. Pretty sure I used 9mm MDF and painted it to avoid dust getting everywhere each time you fit it.
I've added a jpeg with some black blobs on my original template to indicate where you'll have to cut it, if you go for an MDF backing and then cosmetic front piece. Hope this helps.
