Tyre sizes

Had a search through the archives first but couldn't find an answer on what the widest rubber is you can put on the stock 17 rims.

7.5 width I would think means maybe 245/40-17 would be the max, however a couple of people have mentioned 255/40-17's although I would of thought the stock rims are way to narrow for these?

I have 235/40/17 on one of my S4's, and standard size on the other one!
