Anyone running LPG ?
Anyone running LPG ?
Hi I am in the process of shopping for a B6 S4 Avant and I was wondering if anyone has run one on LPG and if so have they had any issues with it ??
Its just the 20mpg is giving me a pain in my chest before I have even got the car, but all the same I have to have one

Re: Anyone running LPG ?
Right well I picked up the Avant so have had a few quotes for LPG systems, they appear to be hovering around £1500 but with the incentive of up to 70-80mpg equivelant I am going to pop over and have a sniff over the next couple of weeks
Re: Anyone running LPG ?
your buying a 4.2 and want the economy of a diesel? not gonna happen.
leave the S4 alone and get a second commuter with the lpg money

Re: Anyone running LPG ?
You won't get 70-80 MPG equivalent. More like 30-35 MPG. Had it on my D2 A8 4.2, £50-60 of LPG gets you 250 miles. I really wouldn't bother with LPG. I hated it. You still need to put fuel in/you need to look for LPG stations rather then your local Shell/BP/Tesco when a coil went I didn't have a clue how to take the LPG system off and local garages wouldn't go near it as apparently they had to be corgi registered so the AA took it three hours away to Unit 20. It took me 5 mins everytime to work out how to fill it with LPG because when I eventually did find an LPG station the filler pieces were always a different design. When you'd stop at the LPG filler pump which was the second one in a row of three, people would shout abuse at you as they don't know your cars LPG and think yor being an inconsiderate git pulling up at the middle pump rather then the one further in front, now a que is forming and horns tooting. Everytime you fill it with LPG, it farts gas in your face. I could go on. It is worth pointing out that others swear by it, but 70-80 mpg will NEVER happen with LPG on a 4.2 V8. Thats either a great salesmen or someone that hasn't a clue about LPG.

Re: Anyone running LPG ?
To be honest I was tickling 35mpg out of it on the motorway ( on a fill up to the brim, drive then fill up again calculation ) I averaged 30mpg on a 200 mile journey. Could give me an excuse to buy another bike though

Re: Anyone running LPG ?

Re: Anyone running LPG ?
There was also a guy in Newcastle running his S4 Avant on lpg as a taxi so if you do the miles it must be worth it.
Re: Anyone running LPG ?
Ok it's not an Audi but.....it is a 4.4 V8 running LPG. It's my Range Rover 2002. Had it converted 4 years ago and have done 50,000 trouble free miles in it. I have a 65 litre tank and get 225 miles on the motorway or around 175 miles around town. There are plenty of garages who have LPG up and down the country.
When we have used it on holiday I have just searched for the nearest garage with LPG and then filled up there. I keep a 1/4 tank of Petrol just in case.
As for servicing the LPG system I have is a prince(potentialy got that spelling wrong) system and it needs a service every 10k. I have had main dealers and independants work on the car and never had a problem.
So for me it is/was a no brainer, I have never noticed a drop in performance switching between the 2 fuels and always grin at filling my LPG tank for £45! I am looking to change the RR for an RS4 Avant and will look to have that converted to ease the wallet pain.

Re: Anyone running LPG ?
Well I did expect mixed results so I have spoken to a couple of LPG specialists and I am interested in having the conversion and apparently if I have the car mapped to run on LPG primarily and petrol as a secondary fuel the results can be even better ( more bhp and even better mpg )
Now this may be salesmans patter but I have heard that 99.9% of conversions use LPG as a secondary fuel and petrol as a primary but LPG burns much cleaner so should be mapped accordingly ( I also read practical performance car and the boffins have been playing with LPG and E85 and getting good results )
So I am still pondering
