Giving it the bird
Re: Giving it the bird
KernowPete,
I've got a G220 polisher and would classify myself as a beginner too, even after having the thing for a couple of years now and having 'practiced' on my old Peugeot 406 coupe many times, and used it on my MK1 Transit camper van as well, think I am starting to get some good results on my RS6.
One think you do learn though, once you start delving into the world of detailing, is that you never stop learning. There are always people who are a million times more knowledgeable than yourself (as the posts by P_G and Reflect Russ above prove!) and I found that reading through posts like this help a great deal.
However, be warned that it does mean you are constantly trying to purchase new / different products to try out after recommendations from others. I've now had to buy a bigger storage box to keep them all in.
Going back to some posts above, I was very impressed with DDJ Black Hole when I helped my mate use it on his black BMW M6. Produced really good deep shine which only improved with a coat of Collinite 476 on top this summer.
Beware, unless you have a private drive or garage, prepare yourself for ridicule from the neighbours if you spend 12 hours a day on both Saturday and Sunday in cleaning your car.
The un-educated in the finer art of detailing will never understand why you don't just pay £5 for the supermarket car-park special wash from somebody with questionable UK residence status!
Apparently, the scouring pads they use, really shift the mountain of bird lime that has been sitting on the bonnet for 6 months!!!!

Chris, thanks for your input. I had a feeling the world of detailing could prove addictive!! At least I've got a big garage to hide myself away in...

Cheers Russ, been looking at the Scholl Concepts products - is the S17+ suitable for a novice?Reflect Russ wrote:
Only then will you know what you are working with but I would go with Scholl Concepts S17+ with their Orange Pad, even on a DA you will get excellent results but if you wanted to hit it harder first go with SC S3Gold Edition....
I have done more Audi's than you can shake a stick at and these polishes make mincemeat of swirls on Audi paint....

lol - too true - I just spent 4 hours on my M3, wash, clay then blackfire all finish paint protection and some blackfire deep gloss spray to give the car a winter coat - neighbours think I'm mental.ChrisRS6 wrote: Beware, unless you have a private drive or garage, prepare yourself for ridicule from the neighbours if you spend 12 hours a day on both Saturday and Sunday in cleaning your car.

Re: Giving it the bird
Just ordered all the stuff - Meguiars G220v2, Scholl Concepts S17+, Poorboys Black Hole, Collinite 915 and a selection of pads. Got the lot for £273 from a firm called Autobrite Direct. That lot along with the stuff I've already got at home (clay bars etc) should give me plenty to be going on with!!
Wish me luck....

Re: Giving it the bird
Sounds like a good Christmas present to yourself!
When I first got my G220, I read-up on how to use it... all the advice about putting the product on the pad, placing the pad flat on the panel, and then switch the machine on etc etc etc... but I didn't read the bit where it said to switch it off before lifting it off the panel!
I left mine switched on and just lifted it off, only to watch my pad fly off, frisbee style, onto the lawn!
Mildly amusing I grant you, but meant that I had to give the pad a thorough clean and dry-out before I could use it again!
Luckily it landed on long grass, and not on anything dusty like the gravel driveway!!!!
