New Tyne Crossing

Post by P_G » Thu Dec 08, 2011 11:07 am

More relevent to our Northern members I know but how splendid is it to have two tunnels now. Gone are the days of 20-120 minute queues in the morning and coming home at night, it is an absolute revelation.

There is one down side though; why when they spent a year refurbishing the existing tunnel did they make such a poor job of resurfacing the outside lane that is now the Northbound tunnel? I went through on Monday night in the RS and thought my rear DRC had failed, the rear end of the car was bouncing all over the place. So much so I was out in the cold when I got home with my torch checking the DRC was intact. But then did the same stretch last night sat behind a car and notice it wasn't just me! Yet the inside lane seemingly is as smooth as a baby's bottom like the new tunnel.

Shame on you TWPTA. That and there is a 40 limit Southbound and a 30 limit Northbound so very little room to do tunnel running in either unless you are in 1st or 2nd.... :sekret:

How much does it cost to use it?

£1.20 each way for non permit holders; £1.08 for permit holders. But it is going up in Jan. to £1.50 for mere mortals, don't know what the immortals will have to pay.

I rarely used the tunnel mainly due to the fact that is was always a real bottleneck. I'll probably use it more often now there are two and the queues seem to have all but dissapeared.

You should do, it is a breeze now, even this morning I drove straight into a free toll booth. Albeit there is no legislation for the fcukwits who arrive with no change or worse still no credit on their permits! :bash: :bash: :bash:

So yet another toll crossing where they haven't updated the equipment to take cards then?

I use the Severn Bridge several times a year and at £5.70 it's not cheap, and a PITA having to remember to have the cash ready.

Your asking a lot graemep, the Tyne crossing tolls don't even give change let alone accept cards! That said there is a change station before the tolls and it may now take cards to give you change.
