Traded my RS6 for an E63. My thoughts

Post by SteveD » Tue Nov 01, 2011 5:34 pm

Traded in my 2004 RS6 Avant full Audi history 58,000miles bought from an Audi main dealer with Audi warranty for E63 2006 saloon 30,000 miles full merc history and merc warranty from a main dealer. After owning the car for a little under 2 years I could no longer deal with the stress and heartache of 20 visits to the main dealer and around25k in warranty work. A few things done

1. DRC replaced
2. ARB bush replaced
2. Steering gater replaced
3. Cooling fans replaced
4. Water Pump replaced
5. Heads replaced dealer threw the cambelt
6. Radiator replaced
7. Windscreen washer bottle replaced
8. Headlight levelling sensor replaced 5 times
9. Clocks replaced
10. Can bus controller replaced
11. TPMS brain replaced twice
12. All TPMS batterys replaced
13. Headlight replaced broken bracket by the dealer
14. Gearbox rear seal replaced
15. Intercooler hoses replaced
16. Air-con pipes blocked
17. Bulkhead drain blocked
18. Windscreen seal replaced
19. Rust on rear arch which Audi warranty denied
20. Engine mounts replaced.
21. Rear window channel replaced after window detached itself

In total the car was at the dealer for around 14 weeks.

A few obervations

1. Do I worry now everytime I start the engine waiting for another warning light and chimes...Erm NO
2. Is my engine down on power becacuse my intercoolers are leaking....Erm NO
3. Does the Merc suffer from creaks and pedal shake...Erm NO
4. Does the radio suffer from crap reception... Erm NO
5. Are the alloys soft as putty....Erm NO
6. Are the door handles suffering from Leprocy...Erm NO
7. Do I worry about wet carpet every time it rains...Erm NO
8. Does the gearbox hunt for gears at 30 mph without being chipped... Erm NO
9. Does the front nobbly bit destroy my tyres....Erm NO

They are 2 different but very similar animals but are also very similar in what they are trying at to achieve.

The merc is on a back foot in the wet due to 2 wheel drive, so pushing on is NOT an option, but in the dry it scares the pants of me more than the Audi ever did. It may be only a little faster but it feels a whole lot quicker. The adjustable air suspension is a revalation and can be set for different conditions and the speed sensative steering while taking a little time to get used is also brilliant. It is roughly 10% more eceonomical (not that it maters) and the sound from the quad tail pipes is amazing.

All in all a fantatstic car, costs no more to run and service (servicing is roughly the same cost) than the RS (front pads are 200 quid dealer fitted, the Audy was 450).

I am a Merc convert and after the issues with Audi, the service depaartment ( 3rd Audi 1st RS6) I can honestly say my Merc dealer is a breath of fresh air in his approach and attitude and I can honestly say I will NEVER buy another Audi.

Sorry if I offend anyone but that's my experience and my opinion.

Thanks and See Ya

Congratulations on your birthday I assume you have reached midlife merc time :) Only kidding a truly cracking car the 63, Knock up some pics to tempt us over to the dark side!! I must agree but it seems you have had a somewhat "cursed" RS6. Def interested in looking at one of those when I get tired of the 6..... not anytime soon I may add and for me 4 wheel drive in this country for 8 months of the year is a must. I just hope I bagged a non cursed one! Good feedback though. :)

In my 3 years of ownership I have had:

1. DRC replaced by PSS9 £1400
2. CV boots replaced £400
3. Leaky intercoolers replaced with Wagners £1000
4. Canbus / TMC module fault £80 from ebay.de

That's about a grand a year on average. I spend more than that on my pool and that's much less complex.

Don't forget to come back in 2 years time and tell what you have had done to the AMG.

Added a couple of photos. To be honest went through the midlife when I bought the TVR then the 911 Turbo just carried on when I bought the 6. In 2 moths hasn't been back to the dealer unlike the 6 which went back probably 4 times.

As said, I think you were lumped with a lemon '6. The E63 looks like a Turkish taxi IMO, wonderful engine though...

I like my ladies a little fuller in the thighs  and ive got to be wanting to stare at here from all angles out of the windows of the house... :P I have always become somewhat strange like that with all my RS's and Im not sure that would do it for me long term. Sorry but its not a looker this one but then again I dont particularly like the new 6's either :?

I think the Merc looks fantastic. Congratulations!

How long will they let you extend the warranty for?

Thanks for your thoughts bam_bam but mine might be worst than most but a lemon..... really!!! just check this forum and then check the MB forum, think it speaks for itself. I like the look personally but then I liked the look of the 6 but then that's beacuse i also like cars that were designed in the 80's.

still it's an AMG and congrats, it sure looks good!

Did I tell you I trade my A4 B7 3.0l tdi in for an E63 -59 plate.
Don't think I would ever go back.

Comparing the C6 and the W212
there are no turbos to fault..
Missing the reverse camera but instead replaced with night vision..
The 4wheel drive safety feature is gone but more room for drifting
the E63 is a monster, a bull that needs riding in and tamed while the C6 is a professional trained horse.
Now the noise is so different... Thunder and lightning when spitting out from the AMG and the 6.. Errghmmm sorry could you press a bit more on the loudpedal please?? :blackrs4:

Audi customer service is not the best in this country and the stealers around here is a let down.
MB customer service is like you said. A breath of fresh air.
Just my opinion of course... :bigblink:

I'd rather eat cock than go on a Merc forum, which is ironic, as I hear they make you eat a cock to join. That might not be true but I'm too busy masturbating to prove it.

It's not a bad looking car but in silver?!?! Surely every time you pull up at a set of traffic lights, someone climbs in the back and asks you how much the fare is to Clapham...

bam_bam just because you like to suck cock and masturbate I won't think any less of you.(Doesen't make you a bad person, live and let live as they say) Cab rides bring them but come on the amount of people that have an RS6 and have tried to update them with lots of bolt on goodies so they look like something from this millenium please... they end up looking like Ripseed Chav mobiles, but then if that floats your boat go have a tug
