Could an RS5 engine be put in the B7 RS4?

Post by ARSEY4 » Tue Nov 01, 2011 11:00 am

I was thinking last night if this would be possible both financially and physically.
Could you transplant any of the RS5 components into an RS4? especially the engine and gearbox?
It would perhaps make an interesting project (not for me, undoing tippex bottles is my limit).
I am sure you could get a bettered RS4 for 10k, new suspension say 4k, RS5 engine say 15 - 20k, gearbox ??
Any mechanics out there care to stick a finger in the air?

Well... anything is possible if you have the funds...

I'd imagine the block and crank are largely unchanged so it would primarily be cylinder heads and manifold work (possible pistons).
Easier than transferring an entire engine.

As for the gearbox - nightmare. assuming it will fit (which isn't given as the chassis is different) then it'll be an electronic nightmare to try to get the two talking properly.
I'd be surprised if it came under 10k labour let alone any R&D and fabricating any parts. So easily knocking on the door of 45k total possibly more and for that you could get an RS5.

If it transformed the car then fine but you can already get 430-440 easily enough out of the RS4 engine so not going to see any major changes there so the cost is just for a flappy paddle gearbox. Nice but not that nice!

As an aside, if I was thinking of a project car then it'd be the RS5 engine and gearbox with the fron drive shaft removed bolted into the back of a lightweight track special.
A modern version of the Esthi perhaps.

My own pet project is a replica XJ220 but with modern internals - was thinking of a LS9 lump (600bhp 6.3 v8 supercharged) but now that I think of it a flappy paddle supercharged RS5 engine would work well too... Hmm...

The RS4 B7 is 4163 and a development of the old school 4.2 V8. Isn't the RS5 effectively 4/5ths of the Gallardo and R8 engine?

R8 v8 is identical to rs4 v8 with the inclusion of a dry sump.

IIRC the V-angle, pistons, capacity and block are all the same between RS5 and RS4, the differences are twin throttle bodies on the RS5 2x50mm IIRC rather than 1x70mm, dual intake manifold (two air filters boxes vs 1) and revised mapping. So in theory finding the space to replace the throttle bodies and intake system would change your RS4 engine into an RS5 one.

If you wanted to do engine and gearbox then that's a different proposition.

That's the marketing bullsh*t that Audi put out - the RS5 engine is the RS4 engine with a different intake - end of.

I hardly doubt there is any difference between the RS4 and RS5 Blocks bar a few fancy things bolted on, I'm guessing all you would need is the block and ECU....Cant see the Loom been any different to the B7!

Haha fair enough! The Gallardo V10 was probably based on the 4.2 V8 architecture anyway, bore centres etc
