Thinking about a B5 again

Post by JRP » Thu Jun 30, 2011 4:03 pm

I toyed with the idea several years ago, then bought a clio v6.

Since then ive sold the v6, bought a house and find my self with an empty feeling as if ive missed out.

So i have a fair wad of cash ready in need of a bit more before i take the plunge, and iam only after a standard one.

I do find my self searching this forum alot, and now iam doubting getting one, due to the possibility of huge expence.

Might seem silly but on average what's the annual cost of a B5, they are getting older, more miles etc.
But the likely hood of cams failing, turbos failing, belts/pulleys water pumps?.

Ive noted that cam belt, water pump and pulleys service is around £6-700, brakes are around 1K

Apart from these things at worst case scenario what are the costs involved? for example turbo fail? or any common failings.

Sorry for the stupid questions but its things at the back of my mind.

Now just over a year into RS4 B5 ownership (currently 86k miles). Had been told to expect ~£3k typical new owner servicing/repair costs in the first year, but actually came out at about £2k made up of cambelt/pulleys/w.pump/major service at £800, front brakes only at £550, MAF/Lambda replacements £250, battery £90, minor service about £140, wiper mechanism strip/lube £40. All this at a knowledgeable, VAG-qualified independent BTW.

This year I'm looking at a minimum of 4 tyres ~£800, an errant occasional misfire £?, 2 more services ~£300, plus whatever else fate throws into the mix.

so not to bad then, in general more the type of things you do as a service or when due, i.e brakes.

When it comes to price etc whats people opinions?

~I looked at nick johnsons he has a few for sale one at 17k with 61k miles or a few at 12-14k with 90k..

Whats the opinion on milage to buying price ?

Thanks again

Any particular reason why you prefer to have a standard one ? You'll only want more power when u get bored of the standard power. :drink:
Avus B5 RS4, Miltek down pipes/No cats/Miltek Cat-back, Wagner uprated SMIC's, short shifter, B7 brakes, Phaeton brake ducts, H&R ARB's, H&R Coilovers, AWE DTS, MRC custom Remap + water meth injection = BIG GRIN on my face with poo in my passengers pants

Id like to have one in standard condition so that i can leave it be for a while. Then start to get the power up, i like to start from a good solid base.

Not saying that a modded one wouldnt be that, chances are its looked after the same if not better. Just id like to do it stage by stage if that's the route i end up going down.

I just worrie i'll end up buying a dog, knowing my luck it would need cams, and a few other high priced things doing in first month of ownership :(

best advice, take it to a specialist and have it checked before you buy it . ive had mine 18months and its a steady stream of cash but i wouldnt be without it . mine has done cams and turbos at same time and it is a sore one, deep breath and do it bit by bit .
