trackers and insurance
trackers and insurance
I know from reading previous posts some insurance providers insist on a tracker, but i've just got off the phone with Admiral, who offered me £33 discount pa for having one. It's going to cost £30 to reconnect and then £140pa subscription!
Also wierdly, I asked how much saving would be to have the car garaged over night, instead of on the drive, and they offered me....zilch! Apparently, statistically, your car is more likely to get damaged by ladders, pots of paint and moving the lawnmower about than gettting nicked off the drive! I suppose it may be geographically biased but even so.. Insurance go figure.
How many out there run trackers? and what discount do you get?

Re: trackers and insurance
I think most car thefts are done by taking the keys anyway so if they can get your car keys they can get the garage keys too no doubt.
Re: trackers and insurance
well.. that was another thing confusing me a little. Excuse me if I'm being a muppett, but the tracker looks for a fob of some kind when the engine is started if it doesn't find it it activates the tracker, notifies the tracking company etc etc, but if they've broken into my house to get my keys (and as you point out the garage keys) then surely they've got the fob too? I mean are you supposed to have it on another key ring and keep them seperately? I don't get it?

Most insurance companies don't give any discount for a tracker, so they actually cost you more.
Then the question is, if your car gets stolen do you actually want it back ? Residuals will be hit due to. Wing stolen recovered, plus you don't know how the car has been treated whilst the scumbags had it.
In my mind your far better off buying rti cover for the car.

Re: trackers and insurance
Usually the premium increases if you park in a garage overnight so if you got offered it for £nil you're doing well!

Re: trackers and insurance
well I know some people on here have horror stories about Amiral, and I'm sure there are about all companies, but they've always been OK with me.
They sent me a Merc SL as a courtesy car once as its all they had that was convertible and over 4.2l. Was hoping for an R8 but alas had to make do with the fast taxi.

Re: trackers and insurance
Seen it mentioned a few times about trackers having little effect on reducing insurance quotes.
Bit puzzled myself as I've done a couple of quotes from the comparison sites on a B7 RS4 with and without a tracker (car parked outside on road) and it reduces my quotes by about 45%. Using a tracker such as Tracker Retrieve it comes down from around £950 to £550. Trouble is fitted cost plus subscription means the savings would only really kick in the second year and I might only be keeping it a year. Decisions ...
