Yes, that makes a lot of sense. As long as you take care to warm the box up then why not. Could be better for cooling, too.

Sorry - been off line for a while. Some interesting posts though - thanks.

So the news is that the oil cooler rad itself is, apparently (after a pressure test) ok. It's the screw thread on one of the connecting pipes that is a bit shot. All of this diagnosis has been carried out by Andrew from Allisport (www.allisport.com) who's an ally specialist (think fabrication too?) based over in Gloucester. Good chap.

Luckily a pal of mine who's motor sport savvy gave me his contact details and it would seem that, at the moment...fingers crossed...he can engineer a new section and weld it as necessary, re test the pressure and hopefully it'll be all sorted.

He did mention that even if he had to build a brand new cooler rad to exact spec as mine (which was do-able as it's obviously now off the motor) it would 'cost half as much as buying one from Audi'....nice to know.

So watch this space as I might've saved a hellofalotofcash by not going to the main dealer.

I've probably tempted fate now saying that. Let's hope that's the last of the hot oil over the driveway.

I think any serious radiator remanufacturor should be able to do this.

I have 2 atf radiators with brownlow radiators in northern ireland at the mo, and they told me the same. Once they refurbish them they will stick a 12 month warrenty on them. Definately better than audi!

The trick is finding a serious radiator remanufacturer...

will post up next week when I get them back on prices, time taken (left in on Monday), and quality of work when I get them back with photos. If they do a good job might be useful contact to have as my car has been off the road for 5 weeks now with a botched repair and trying to source these pieces of rocking horse <beep>!
