So i start the car this monring, and begin scrapping the screen. Whilst doing this i hear a noise like plastic expanding under heat, i think to myself "thats new" but put it down to it being very cold this morning.
Anyway after a few mins of running my heater normally blows nice and warm, but not this time. So after a mile or so i think, let stop and restart the engine just in case the climate is having a bad day.
Just as i pull over the DIS displays "check fluid level" at which point the engine is tuned straight off.
I pop the bonnnet and see about 1" of coolant in the tank and a load of steam.
Audi pick me up and i get a nice A4 Avant to drive for the day.
They havent confirm the problem yet, but i guess its a nice plastic pump gone pop. My car is a March 2010 with just under 6000 miles on the clock.
The temp gauge was showing normal, my question is could this have fryed any other part of the engine before or after the thermostat?
Cheers,
Phil.

you should be fine, when mine went they couldn't get my car booked in for a few days and I had to limp around with a bottle in the boot, so long as it hadn't run dry and you weren't thrashing it you should be fine.

a lady I work has a S4 Saloon also had a water pump failure last week, again on that morning when it dipped to -5c
Audi collected and sorted it out, but its cheesed her off as when it was serviced a few week previous she had enquired about the water pump issues and asked for hers to be checked

Driving yesterday I get the "check coolant level", I duly stopped and the level was between Min and Max. Then it dropped rapidly. I bought some coolant and needed to put 1.5 (or so) litres.
Audi will get a call today as I guess there must be a leak or something.
I'll update for those interested. It's an April 2010 car with 16,000 miles.

Spoke to Audi "mong" and he said to keep an eye on it.....(this was the same guy who, when my car was in for sqeaky brakes a while back, told me my car "was in pieces" so I couldn't collect it when I wanted to and I subsequently found out that the wheels, let alone the brake calipers had not even been removed...just a high pressure air spray. very honest Service Manager explained.)
Well, it did the same thing a mile away from my house so a call went in to Audi assistance......very, very efficient.
I was impressed as my car was collected and a replacement delivered within 2.5 hours on Monday. The chap at Audi assistance reckoned it was a thermostat which is a recall part.
Call Audi Reading yesterday at 4pm and they hadn't even looked at it! 48 hour SLA apparantly.
I'll see what happens today.....
