Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
I'll pass on today's 'update' with zero comment from me.
no phone call come home time so I called Audi. Warranty company had asked for more information on error codes and history of the car which Audi Stirling has now faxed to them. They won't order up the parts until they've had authorisation to proceed. They hoped they might get that today but hadn't when I called. So (assuming authorisation tomorrow) suspect the parts won't arrive until Sat or Mon am now. I then asked how long the job would take after that - some shuffling of papers then - "it's about 4 - 4.5 hours, so you should have it back Monday evening".

I am getting de ja vu here malcolm, pretty much the way the warranty company dealt with mine although mine had thrown up 17125 error code - never in limp mode though interestingly enough!
Had a look at the mackie transmissions link, look like they tick most of the boxes (zf authorised etc) but wonder if they have ever worked on an RS6? Only reason I question this is that they seem to offer a "lifetime warranty" on their TC's - given the rate 6's seem to eat them that's a pretty big call!

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Hey Malcolm, I have just joined the club, 17125 code , in the hand of WD. Hopefully they will come through!!!, its only on 49000miles.
I think Mackies had a look at my car 2 days ago when they were at the garage where my car is ( Autotecknic) Roysth. Its got 2 faults ,they tested the car for an hr, so it will be a strip down and rebuild . The guy who is working on it had looked after my UR-Quatts .He is also seriously thinking of buying the DRC tool , he has had so many cars in to get the re-charge etc etc. Will keep all us posted in the great north if this happens.

Well if I had never read a message on here I'd be quite happy right now. WD are covering the valve block repair and, parts availability willing, my car should be available for pick up on Tuesday.

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Hi Malcolm Su . My gearbox died Aug 09 with all the same things you described. Mackies was where it ended up. I was outwith warranty and paid £5K. Took it back Jan 10 for service and guy said all the mechanics had put in for holidays when they saw it was due back in.
Having said that, the car was fantastic after reconditioned gearbox; I think it must have been slowly dying from when I bought it ( Jan 07) but I didn't realise the slamming gearchanges and complete flake out in cold weather were signs it was on the way out. Hope warranty covers it but if not Mackies seem excellent. And I'm overdue a service for the box so will be out there again soon...

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Okay, well Audi phoned me back this morning. There had been a further delay due to another part being required - don't yet know what that was. Said they hoped to get my car back to me tonight.
Phoned mid morning to say had just taken it for a test drive have completed the valve block change. Unfortunately tech said it was still banging from first to second.
Said they now wanted to remove the box to send away for rebuild and would phone the warranty company to get approval.
Next call I got was around 5 from the warranty company. They said Audi wanted to replace the box at £5,500 and they wouldn't cover a replacement box. They would however cover a gearbox repair. But Audi didn't want to do that.
So the warranty company want to give the repair to their preferred gearbox repairer - A1 Premier Transmissions http://www.a1premiertransmissions.co.uk/
I'm in Scotland they're in Bedfordshire but will collect from Audi. However I've still a large bill with Audi to settle - even though they've not managed to repair what I originally put the car in for. I'll have to phone them tomorrow now to sort that out but I think I'm due £90 diagnostic (!); £200 ATF flush and refill and £1820 valve block repair. Warranty company agreed to a percentage of the latter repair.
I can see it being middle to end of next week before car's back... Sigh

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Sorry to hear your news mate, was really hoping the valve body would do it! As mentioned mine had similar symptoms, had gearbox rebuild and zf recon torque converter. Still had 17125 fault so new TC from Audi, took out recon unit but still same issue! Now new valve body on order, if this does not sort it I am fecked!
Had a look at the link, rubbish website and little information. Maybe someone on here knows or has used them? I would be a little worried about the amount of work involved to get the box out. The place where mine is have now perfected getting the box out without removing the engine however most places including Audi say will take the lot out. All well and good but need to be sure whoever carries out the work has the skills to get it out without damage but more importantly get it back in.
Try and get the warranty company to ship it to unit 20, think Grizz can do a box for £5500 fitted - wish I had taken mine there or mrc (but that's even further for you)
Fingers remain crossed

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
I just remembered that the warranty company said they sent an engineer out to inspect the car before agreeing to the valve block repair and said they would do the same again once A1 had stripped down the gearbox. They're doing this because a gearbox is not covered under their warranty. So I've just had a look at what is covered.
"Automatic transmission
automatic transmission clutches, bearings, brake bands, bushed, extension shaft, gears, internal governor, oil pump, servos, shafts, torque converter, valve block, valves, drive chains, gear lever, input shaft oil seal, moderator valve."
Bearing in mind I'm not technical, in stripping down the box to repair it is it likely there's any part that will need replaced (through failure not rebuild) not included in the above list?
My warranty is a pay now, claim back later type and I am getting concerned about my overall outlay here... They said they wouldn't allow Audi to replace the box - £5,500 they said, although others have quoted £7,500 for a new box - and they're sending to A1 because it's the cheaper option. Can't be that much given how much Ian paid to have his rebuild at Mackies?

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Spent the past wee while Googling A1 Premier Transmissions - they crop up in a quite a few other car forums. No other RS6 tales yet but quite a few Audi, BMW, Lexus, Porsche, Mercedes owners and other warranty companies have good words. 12 month warranty afterwards too...

Cobalt in 2008 when they had done "5 x RS6s" http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=72034
and I see Drybeer had a B6 S4 gearbox repaired there too... A bit of comfort

Re: Time to break open the piggy bank again...
Are you telling me that Audi are charging you £2120 quid and the box is still exactly the same? You're joking right? Or am I reading that wrong?MalcolmSu wrote:..£90 diagnostic (!); £200 ATF flush and refill and £1820 valve block repair. Warranty company agreed to a percentage of the latter repair.
Sorry, but they are taking the complete and utter PISS if that's the case.

I have read that 3 time's now and can't see anything about ''o'' ring's. Wait for that reason to be used. The clutch pack piston's have ''o'' rings on them and if they are the same as the zf transmissions i work on then these fail. I would give Grizz a call and have a word with him, i'm sure he would be able to help you out.
