Is my car restricted???

Post by Fatneck73 » Mon May 23, 2011 7:57 pm

Hello all

I've just read that an RS4 is restricted in the first 3 gears. Is my RS6? And does this also have a speed limiter? And most importantly...can MRC remove both of these???

MRC can sort it for sure, i'm sure the RS6 is limited to 155mph but have heard UK spec cars seem to do 175mph standard.

I believe it's a torque restriction. God knows why exactly...you'd think after fitting quattro the bit of NA torque it has shouldn't be an issue. Ingolstadt is a silly place.

I thought it was for marketing purposes to ensure the R8 with the same engine was appreciably quicker 0-60?

The R8 has the same sort of torque limiter in the first 3 gears as the RS4 :) Of course we can remove them on either car, it's actually funny, some "tuners" have not even heard of those, yet they claim miraculous power gains :biggrin3:

RS6 has a top speed limiter active at 255km/h or roughly 158.44mph, however, due to speedo inaccuracy (and sometimes non OEM tyre sizes which contributes to the speedo not being accurate), you often see at least 175 mph on a standard car, which leads most people to think their cars aren't restricted :)
I might be in on Saturday, but not 100% sure of that yet, but even if I'm not, you're in good hands ;)

Is the torque limitation there to protect the clutch?

Stresses on the clutch are far worse in 4th 5th and 6th than the 1st 3 gears IMHO. Usually when a clutch starts slipping, it always slips in high gears, not in the lower ones ;) my answer to this question is that I don't know but the cars feel A LOT better once delimited :)

Brilliant. I hope to be seeing you soon to get mine done, and a friend of mine is interested in getting his B7 done. This will help me persuade him. I'll no doubt be in touch with you soon

Had my stock RS6 at around 175 indicated briefly, it was 163.7 mph GPS. I don't think it could possibly be 20mph off on stock tire size at "only" 175 indicated.

The German ones weren't restricted to 155. I believe yours is german, no?

No RS6 ever left the factory without a top speed limiter, but in some cases, even the ECU is off by a bit. I have customers who told me they had hit 300km/h on
stock cars, but for some I have serious reasons to doubt it :)

Even an RS6+ is still limited at 255km/h.

I hate to sound like a party breaker but that's all urban myths and things about grass being greener etc etc. C5 RS6s were all limited, ONE variant of the Plus had the limiter at 275km/h from the factory, the rest were all 255km/h, and US/Canadian versions were limited at 245ish km/h (unusual as most US Audis are
limited at 205-210km/h)

I probably have each and every production and pre-production original software file for RS4 and RS6 ever made, so I'm pretty sure of what I'm saying too ;)
