And I have read elsewhere that with the right spacer to correct the offset it'll fit over the front caliper too.vhv5hss wrote:Found that if we brought a rear wheel forward then an OEM 17" spare will fit over rear calipers. So, any spare must at least suit a rear fitment and rolling diameter must be equal. That is easy enough to work out with all the calculators etc available on the net nowadays.
Goes without saying that an OEM 17" spare now goes on every trip with us although it does get removed to the shed for closer to home running around.

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
Ummm - am I being dumb??
If the wheel + tyre is going to have the same rolling radius as the other wheels (to avoid knackering the transmission) then it will have the same overall radius give or take a mm or two - in which case either it fits the existing hole in the boot or it doesn't, irrespective of the size of the wheel in the middle!
And no, whether it is inflated or not will not make a lot of difference - you'd have to put a wrinkle in the tread to get much change of radius, and that will soon deform the tyre.....

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
standard. But it was whether a 17 would fit over the caliper which was in question essentially.
Yes I thought maybe a deflated tyre might make it squeeze it, but I havent tried it. was just a suggestion.

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
Yep -but if changing the wheel size doesn't actually affect whether it will fit in the hole, you might as well use a standard 18" or 19" wheel and then there is no problem re calipers!

Less flex in the tyre to make it fit was my thinking.Daveperc wrote:Yep -but if changing the wheel size doesn't actually affect whether it will fit in the hole, you might as well use a standard 18" or 19" wheel and then there is no problem re calipers!

Just had a look. It seems to me based on the measurements I took that it'd be possible to mount the battery in the middle of the well, and place a full sized 19 with matched tyre over the top of it (outside face facing up). Even better would be a wheel with a higher offset to allow more height inside for the battery to fit, and a corresponding correcting spacer tucked down the side.
Just suggestions. I'd like to see this work somehow...

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
I recall that someone on here bought some 19" BBS alloys, and because of raised lettering in the inside face of the alloy, the 2mm of raised lettering rubbed on the brakes, so they had to grind off the lettering (and ballance it up) so that they could use them.
One idea, as a quick check, you could disconnect your battery, clear out the well temporarially and see if one of your tyres fit?

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
Problem is there's a whole bunch of metal work making the base of the battery holder which would prevent the wheel From laying flat. You'd need to measure the wheel accurately and be totally committed. Best fix I think though. Doubt you'd even need to dick around with lengthening the cables either.

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
I can't help thinking that if it were this easy either Audi would have done it in the first place, or someone else would have done it by now.....
Re: Battery relocation on rs6
My solution was to carry a spare tyre in the boot; as you could fill it inside with the usual junk I always used to carry, and the boot is plenty large enough for everyday stuff. Didn't take much more space than the huuuggeee battery should that of been relocated.
In the event that I had a puncture (which in the RS6 is usually side wall failure from a pothole or something), I had a spare to be able for tyre man to fit.

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
Is this the same Audi who designed DRC? I dont think theyre always right. Plus most of us use it as a daily driver, and possibly the odd track day. I think a spare wheel is warranted.Daveperc wrote:I can't help thinking that if it were this easy either Audi would have done it in the first place, or someone else would have done it by now.....

Re: Battery relocation on rs6
It's the same Audi who designed the whole of our beloved beasts - and we wouldn't be on this forum if we didn't love em!!
My point was simply that I'd be surprised if it is as simple as moving the battery to the middle and a bit higher offset wheel as I would think that the design boys probably considered this option. It may be they ruled it out for weight or cost reasons - but if that were the case then we would have read on here about enthusiasts doing it anyway.
The lack of a place for a spare has been a debating point on here for the last four years at least, and no-one I can recall has come up with a better solution than Steve H's "carry a spare tyre (without wheel) so that you can fix relatively easily.
One thought I have wondered about is how hard it would be to mount a full wheel on the boot lid/tailgate. Years ago my Dad had a Rover 3500 which had just that. It meant a special latch to keep the boot open, but gave loads more space inside. Alternatively, perhaps a bracket that basically sat into the bumper to take the weight, with just a stay to the tailgate for stability. It would need lifting off to open the tailgate, but that wouldn't be a problem for us big strong guys!!
Dave
PS - re DRC - the design concept is fine - the problem has been the implementation which isn't actually Audi, but a sub supplier. When DRC works it's brilliant - simply poor reliability in the older systems, coupled with a very slow response to the fact that there were issues with it. Basically not a technical design/engineering problem, but really poor management and customer care.
