Change of Tyre Size

Post by boulevard » Mon May 16, 2011 4:09 pm

I have 235 40 18 on standard B6 S4 Avus alloys at the moment. Are there any major implications of dropping to 225 or up to 245? I have been offered a good discount on the new Michelin Pilot Super Sports but sods law they dont do them in 235 on an 18.

Thanks

Steve

Standard tyre size for the avus alloys 225/40/18 so you will be returning the car to stock (speedo readings return to 'normal' as well.) If you have been offered a good deal on tyres then my opinion would be to stick with the 225's

Nope, the B6 B7 S4 with 18 x 8J alloys runs 235 from the factory. 225 width are significantly cheaper than original spec 235, hence S4s end up dropping to 225. Previous owner probably did this on yours Grum. I've gone for slightly narrower winter wheels for this reason - they'll safely run 225s making the rubber far cheaper.

Ah, my mistake. Apologies for the duff info. Mine had ABT alloys on when I bought it but the spare is the original with...yes,...225 on it.

Off to the naughty step

Safety wise, I don't think you have any real issues. Personally I feel the 235 is stretched enough already, and I wouldn't want to drop to 225. If you were going to go anywhere, 245 would probably sit squarer than 225?

Thanks for your thoughts. I will probably go for Michelin PILOT SPORT 3 XL in 235 as discount still applies to those aswell rather than stray from Audi's original sizes.

That's seriously annoying. Mine don't need replacing yet, but was interested in the new Pilot Super Sports. Hopefully they expand the available sizes.

I went to the launch event couple of weeks agao (hence the discount), drove a variety of cars with Super Sports on and then same cars with competitor tyres on (Conti's, Bridgestones etc) and the Super Sports outperformed in all the tests/scenarios I drove in.

Just annoying they havent done a 235/40/18 but maybe it will come but their focus seems to be on 19" and upwards.

Moved to Pilot Sport 3s on my dads Sportback after the previous Goodyears Assymetrics only lasted about 12k. The Pilots actually wore out faster (!) and were no grippier, hence it's just gone back to Goodyears.

I currently have a combo of Avons & Toyos left over from previous owner. They claimed the new tyres are 20% better or something on mileage than PS2's, they never mentioned the PS3's at the presentation strangely.

The 1st S4 I bought was fitted with 225/40 R18 straight from the dealer, can only assume previous owner fitted that size and dealer just copied it without checking (the audi approved checklist). I only realised after kerbing an alloy that the tyre was too narrow for the wheel. Checked the spare in the boot, 235/40 R18, the dealer had to replace all 4 tyres.

I have not heard good things about the PS3 and would avoid buying at all costs, I like the super sport but as said not in our size, not fair.

Maybe I will go for the PS2. It was the tyre at the launch they were comparing the SS too when they said it was better than there previous tyre in various elements.
