Afaik, for most cars it is when you are 1 litre down, this allows you to conveniently purchase a 1 litre bottle at he garage and top up

can someone advise as to the correct procedure to check the oil level? I inserted the dipstick right back in to the very end, when it kinda "gets stuck"...
is that how I am supposed to do this?

also: any fellow member in London I could borrow the vacuum pump from this weekend? would be very much obliged

As said before get a syringe and a length of tube from halfrauds and suck it out with that.

Arthur had a thread recently about reading the dipstick, it was quite in-depth...

thanks - someone suggested a 50ml syringe

what's the best way for doing this? also the tube needs to be put where the dipstick is or where you normally put the oil in? :blackrs4:

Yellow or red?

Yellow comes on when the oil is about 0.5 litre below the min.

Red comes on when oil pressure is dangerously low - and your engine is shortly going to go expensively bang!

Dave what do you suggest to remove the oil overfill? I will go later to a DIY Shop and wanted to avoid driving my car with too much oil on it

Fudge knows why mine came on half way between max and min then. Whilst I check the dipstick manually from time to time, I'd much rather it was over keen than the opposite way around.

ok but at what temperature should I check? 70 degrees? 100? results seem to vary according to this (and obviously so I should say)

it's just that now I don't remember what temp I had when I first noticed the oil seemed a bit low... :x
I found this thread that explains how "not clear" this is to some

ours is the one on the right

if at or below C add 1 liter
if between C and B add 1/2 and check/adjust
if at B add <1/4 and check/adjust (but this is fine as is)
>B you are fine
>A over filled

check with oil hot >90 C
level ground (I always check in the same spot, garage, etc. for consistency)
do it within 3-5 minutes of shutdown
do it 2 or 3 times to get a repeatable reading
have a rag/paper towel to wipe the stick clean before reading
make sure stick is fully inserted, and withdraw slowly holding straight up

Thanks Arthur
1st reading was at C. Added 0.5 lt and now it reads above A

Clearly one of the readings was heavily wrong

Sonny: thanks for the offer but I'll decline :)

Pisquano - were both your readings at the same temp, same bit of level ground?

Whilst I know you shouldn't go above MAX, is there an amount you can go over MAX before having to suck some back out? 1/4 litre? I was talking to some guys today who do lots of track days etc (not in RS4s admittedly) and they all said they overfill the oil at the start of the day.
