Kenwood 7240 in rs6

Post by chunky79 » Tue Apr 05, 2011 7:07 am

Hi Guys

I'm looking to replace my rns-d this weekend with a Kenwood dnx7240. I have read on here that you can't use the audi aerial cause it won't work off after market headunits?
I have brought the facia surround and bose fly lead but didn't know if i needed to buy anything that will make the aerial work? I was hoping to get it all done in one go :?

cheers

The Audi aerial amplifiers require power on the aerial connector from the head unit, so you need to buy a lead that injects switched 12V onto the aerial lead, connect that to the Amp Enable signal out of the head unit and you should be OK.

Right, got the head unit all nice and in. PROBLEM, I'm getting a really load popping when the head unit is turned on and off. I have swapped the power lead on the bose adaptor from per to ign live but still getting it.
Anyone have any idea's to stop it at all?
I have had a look on google quickly but not found a solution.

cheers

The amp on lead should be connected to the amp enable output form the head unit, and the amp should have permanent 12V power.

With the RNS-E the amp gets turned on when you unlock the car and stays turned on until either you lock the car or 30 minutes after you turn the ignition off - so you wouldn't normally hear any click.

Plus OE Audi radios have a "soft start" on the line outputs - if the Kenwood doesn't have this then any isolating capacitors on the line outputs of the Kenwood or the line inputs of the Audi amp will charge up fast, hence creating the switch on thump.

don't suppose you know which wire gives the rns-e the feed when the car is unlocked do you dave? had a little play and found if the kenwood is powered up first then i power the amp up it doesn't pop. thought about fitting a delay timer to the amp feed.

There isn't a wire!!!

The RNS-E only has permanent 12V, it "knows" when the car is unlocked, when the ignition is turned on, when the lights go on, etc via messages on the CAN bus.

There must be a wire Dave, but it will be a low voltage sensing wire from the can bus which will be no good. What i have found is, if the radio is fired up first then i give the amp 12v it doesn't bang. Going to try and wire in a delay relay to the amp feed and see if that works.
Can't understand how some of us have had this problem yet others haven't.
Thanks for the help Dave. Do you work for audi cause you seem to be able to help alot of people out?

OK I've been retrofitting the RNS-E for 6 years and I know bu**er all...

There IS NO SUCH WIRE - period.

Like nearly all modern cars many switching functions are NOT done by wires any more but by CAN bus messaging.

No I do NOT work for Audi - but I used to be Electronics Manager for a well known car company (but I won't say who, other than it's not Audi or any other company in the VAG group).

Dave, i think you have took my replies the wrong way. I'm really grateful for your help.
I was only asking if you worked for audi due to your knowledge.
I think i need a delay relay of around 10 seconds, this will give the headunit time to fire up fully then turn the amp on.
Still don't understand why some have the ''pop'' yet others don't
